what is your favorite pop act of the last 20 years?
since pop is such a broad umbrella, i'll narrow it & say an outfit that has achieved a significant level of commercial success

1. If you define pop music as emphasis on strong melodic hooks,
then it's obviously New Order. Who else is there?

11. Well, the second side, anyway.
Half of it is great, and a half-great New Order album still beats 99% of other bands' greatest works.

18. Nah, I'm too scared it'll be weak.
I'm always kinda trepidacious when it gets to this point in a great band's career.

I've always had a soft spot for LowLife myself, closely followed by PCL and Technique.

4. The Cure
They haven't always been pop, and they started out more than 20 years ago (Horrifyingly, I have just realized that I have been a fan of theirs for 23 years), but they're fairly pop now and still going. So that's my vote.

5. Of the last 20 years, fphewwwww, ahhh... hmmmm
I guess I'd have to say The Police.

Sting is just not the same without Andy's hypnotic guitar licks and Stewart's exotic rhythms.

23. They definitely hit their stride with Zenyatta
And I think that Ghost was underrated. Synchronicity was SLIGHTLY below the peak.

21. In '95 I had a painful sebaceous cyst inside the rim of my ear
Couldn't even hold the phone to my ear without substantial pain. The internal medicine specialist charged plenty but couldn't do a damn thing to get rid of it or lessen it.

One night I squeezed like hell several times and finally popped it. One of the great accomplishments of my life. If it were more than 20 years ago, I would have obeyed the specified guidelines and kept silent.

28. Ride or Darkside
This is really hard. There's no way I can pick one. I'm going to CHEAT.

Joy Division

Smiths

echo & the bunnymen

The Cure

DARKSIDE (prolly my fav) voodoo guitar is totally epic

The Verve

My Bloody Valentine

Geez, they sort of blend in together. I mean Jesus and Mary Chain aren't pop. But are they not? Heavy, man. I think I need to watch an episode of The Young Ones now. :)

29. Whatever one dies from a cocaine-driven unstoppable hemorrhage first
That pop act will get my undying applause.

Especially if they only managed to get less than three albums made before they were discarded by the ignorant shitbag segment of America that decides who's popular.

32. Another act, and yes, I'll say it; I don't care how UNHIP it sounds
Michael Jackson.

I know we're jaded by the current freakshow inhabiting this moniker but back in '85, face it, he was badder than a mug. He was still working with Quincy Jones putting out great R&B. It was a wonderful time.
