Oh God, I just screwed up at work!!!
I just got a call from one of the other counselors, asking me about a closing report I was supposed to have done back on 10/7. The case is in this person's name, but I was working it. I swear I had done the report, but when I looked, it turns out I hadn't! I was really sick at the time, so maybe that explains it, but God, I can't believe it! I have to write it right now, which I will, but the very worst thing is that the counselor who called me today has had me in her high beams for about two months, not because of anything specific (like this incident) but because that's what she does. I used to work with her at another company, and one time she tried to fire somebody because a client had called to complain about that person, and this counselor did not even try to find out that person's side of the story, just took the client's word. Had it not been for my intervention, that other counselor would have been fired right then and there. Now I have screwed up something that has her name on it, and I'll bet anything she is now after my head! Oh crap crap crap! Guess I'd better get this report written before the ax falls.

 :scared:

2. Thanks.
I'm trying to reach my immediate supervisor (who knows that the counselor who called me can be, shall we say, "on the hunt" to find any little thing she can against her "pick of the month"). I don't deny I screwed up, but whereas most people would say, just take care of it and try not to let it happen again, this person doesn't do that so easily. Well, back to the report.

10. yeah, but if it has her name on it
then she should have followed up on 10/08 to make sure it was done so it goes in the books as her error. That's what she gets for delegating, instead of doing her own tanjed report.

13. Agreed, but I also have responsibility there too.
And in the state of mind she was in when she called me, that was the last thing I was going to bring up at that time.

In fact, if I know before anyone else I've made a mistake, I'll usually rat my own self out!

4. Gosh. I was just
discussing the work climate we have here with Heidi this afternoon. There's a famous plant who makes exceptional quality machines, but you'd be stunned. 1 hr cigarette break? Well, yes, why not?

The work is done, and personally I think that's all what counts. If you can achieve this climate and do this good as a plant, you're better than most others.

Something that's rarely considerated. People usually work there for a lifetime. Some might call this unusual and tend to find 'progression' in a high employers rotation, like: 'See, we're good, we fire and hire constantly'. I'm not sure if that's the solution in the long run.

I'm sure you do a terrific job just from observing your posts on here. Hang on!

8. Thank you.
This person is not my direct supervisor/manager, so cannot directly fire me, and my own direct supervisor/manager knows how this person is, and has told me he has my back, so that's good (I'm trying to get hold of him).

One good thing -- the manager of the company I was at previously really wants me to come back, so I guess I have a fall-back.

:)

14. The thing is, the Department of Labor & Industries here in
Washington (where we get most of our referrals from), has this formula by which they measure a vocational counselor's performance (they are being sued because of this, because it is a pretty unrealistic rating formula), and if you don't meet the cut-off, you will be "conditional" meaning there are few instances where you can get referrals. Many of us work cases for other counselors, because of various and sundry reasons. If I screw up on someone else's case it does not affect MY rating, it affects THEIR rating. Sorry to go into details that have no meaning to othetrs, but essentially, because LNI set things up this way, it puts the private counselors under a lot of false tension. It's a freakin' mess, and sometimes, what happened today is the result!

20. I understand what you're saying.
I was an investigator for CPS many years ago. The paperwork was overwhelming.

Hang in there

I hope conditions get better although they didn't with us. We had open job lines that went unfilled so the rest of the caseworkers had to pick up the overload. We were all over the number of new cases that the state allowed.

22. Sounds like a typical government agency!
Private counselors like me don't have that problem, but many of the Claims Managers we work with at Labor & Industries have hundreds and hundreds of cases, and are overwhelmed. Many of the long-timers have left the agency, and now work as vocational counselors in the private sector, because they could not take the workload any more.

And thanks, Joan, I'm hanging in! :loveya:

17. Well, I just talked to my immediate supervisor/manager
to give him a heads up, in case this other counselor emailed or called him about it, I did not want him blindsided. He did not seem to think it was a big deal, but knows that this other counselor can make Mt. Everest out of a mole hill. He thinks I did the appropriate thing by apologizing to the counselor, and trying to reach the Claims Manager at LNI so I can explain to her what happened, and fax the report to her. He's cool, and again said that if I felt the other counselor was getting out of line, or over-reacting, to let him know and he will help me deal with it.

18. I made ANOTHER mistake today too.
Doesn't it *suck*?

It's horrible, because these other people can (in the worst case scenario) get you fired.

And it sucks living like that sometimes, that you owe your livelihood to someone else.

:(

I'm having a drink later, I think. How 'bout you?

36. Fortunately, I work from home
so at least I don't have the added stress of trying to "maintain" in front of others. I did talk to my immediate supervisor/manager, and while he (as well as I) acknowledges it was a mistake, he does not see it as the end of the world, and told me to let him know if the other counselor gets out of hand about it.

Plus it helped that my dog licked my tears away -- I cried for a little bit after I got off the phone with the counselor.
