Your good deed for the day (if you choose to accept the mission):
Help n00b Call Me Wesley achieve 100 posts. He's currently at 97 and both his karma and self-esteem hinge on being "less new." So show the n00b some luv, my friends. (Yeah, I married a man who's more n00b than me, both in terms of chronological and DU age. )

Call Me Wesley, the reply button is all yours. Live long and prosper.

20. Call Me Wesley, you have my eternal envy
You really hit the jackpot in the wonderful marital lottery with our Miss Heidi. I'm sure you realize this, and thank the Buddha for your good fortune this time around the track.

Welcome to DU... just try not to gloat too much.

22. well I have a question on that
Does one actually 'thank the buddha' as if the buddha is a deity. They seemed to do the same thing in 'The King and I' where they did a play of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' (is this getting convoluted or what - a movie where they do a play based on a book?) and they used 'Buddha' in place of 'god' or 'Jesus'.

My knowledge of Buddhism is almost, but not quite, limited to EF Schumacher's chapter on Buddhist economics, but it seemed to me that was not right, that Buddha is revered more like Moses, Elijah, or Mohammed, as a rabbi, and not as a deity.

25. I totally agree,
Buddha is no deity as 'God' or 'Jesus'. He is an enlightened being, and there are infinitive numbers of Buddhas; not only restricted to our planet.

We all can achieve this state. It's more a matter of how you're walking your path. And I'm part of a Zen Buddhist, so whorshipping any Buddha as a deity would make me yawn.

26. Well, as long as he's thankful!
Just a little play on words on my part... but why can't he thank the Buddha? He can thank Big Bird or the FSM or Will Rogers for that matter. Maybe I should have said "thank your lucky stars."

Most of all, I hope he thanks Heidi. It really sounds like they were made for each other, and it's so good when the people who are made for each other actually FIND each other!

:)

27. Of course you can thank the Buddha,
or any other one of your choice (Will Rogers will do fine). There's nothing wrong with that. Heck, you can even thank yourself for achieving something.

And yes, we did FIND each other.

28. I did not mean to pick on the phrasing
it is just a common phrase that I had a question about, not really expressing umbrage, except in the sense that I wonder if buddhists would be bothered by a misrepresentation of buddhism in 'the King and I'. Then again, it probably takes more to disturb the equanimity of a buddhist.

Thanking 'lucky stars' would imply either a belief in astrology or in luck. Fundies used to argue with me in college that there is no such thing as luck, and mostly I agree with that. For example, I might be bowling, and hit the head pin directly, instead of the pocket. Then I would say 'I am lucky that I did not get a split'. Except there is no 'force' or 'imp' called 'luck' which knocked the seven pin over. The ball and pins were obeying the laws of physics and things fell my way.

But I am just rambling, rather than trying to make an issue out of phraseology. I think Heidi's pretty cool too, and anybody who is a fan of Spocko is a-okay in my book.
