Who's got the record for romantic dry spells in here?
I saw the post about breakups... but breakups are a whole lot worse when they're followed by a long dry spell.

I'll bet I hold the record. Dry spell. You ever hear of the Sahara? It usually gets rain once a year. Not me. Compared to me, the Sahara is a rain forest. I had a steady in college from 1986-1988, but I haven't dated anyone more than 4 times since. That's right. My dry spell is seventeen years and counting. When June rolls around it will be 18 years.

That's right. The last time I had a girlfriend,

- Ronald Reagan was president
- MTV still played music
- DVDs hadn't been invented
- Most printers were dot-matrix
- The Internet pretty much didn't exist
- Most of us had hardly heard of Iraq
- The Soviet Union would compete one more time in the Olympics
- Only one "Die Hard" movie had been made
- Johnny Carson was still hosting the "Tonight Show"
- "Seinfeld" hadn't aired yet
- Neither had "Friends" (and wouldn't for another 6 years)
- For that matter, neither had "Star Trek: The Next Generation"
- People thought Prince Charles and Princess Di had a happy marriage

Damn. I should just give up. Can anyone beat this? For your sakes, I hope not.

2. Got you beat
Before I met my wife in 1996, the last time I had a romantic involvement,

Don McLean was singing "American Pie"
I was working on the McGovern Campaign
My Ford LTD cost me $3500
Gas was 27.9 cents/gallon
The Dolphins went undefeated
All the girls wanted to be gymnasts like Olga Korbut
Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals in Munich
I was watching the Easter Offensive in Vietnam
Richard Nixon was talking about "Peace with Honor"
Smokin' Joe Frazier was punching everyone out
Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were still in high school

And for those of you who don't remember any of this, the year was 1972.

11. I realized the other day that no one has kissed me in two years.
And I haven't wanted to kiss anyone in two years. Because I'm done with dating, and gradually, my desire for physical intimacy declined. That's what happenes when you are betrayed.

12. I would say that I have never had a girlfriend
but I guess that I have had more than four dates since 1988, but dated the same woman more than four times? I guess I did that once back in 1993, but she never really was a girlfriend. It was like I was asking her out for the first time each time I asked her out. I never got much of a sign of affection from her, unless talking on the phone with me when I called. Did she ever call me? No. Did she get me a Christmas present? No? A birthday present? No. Did she even know when my birthday was? Probably not. So not a girlfriend.

So if you figure that I could have started dating when I was 15 and that I am 43 now. That is a 28 year dry spell.

14. Finally, a contest I can compete in!
Well, I'm on my way at least... After a three-year relationship that totally broke my heart when it ended three years ago there's been nothing in the way of a serioius relationship since for me.

18. Oh, you were so close.
I have been blissfully single for 20 years. Yes, count 'em. I have been married three times, and the third wasn't a charm, so I folded up shop and have remained sane and content ever since. My friends sometimes offer to fix me up and I assure them I'm perfectly capable of picking my own a-holes, thanks anyway.

I'm just a cyclic person with just about everything in my life. This is my cycle. Perhaps I don't feel confident in choosing a significant other that won't make me tear my hair out. I don't think about it much anymore. When it's right for me, it will happen. I think the key is being okay with yourself such that it really doesn't matter. If being hit upside the head unexpectedly happens, it will happen.
