I could really use a hug or a kind word.
They're going to put my baby under at the hospital tomorrow.

5. Well, here you go...
Even at 3, I'm sure your baby will be just fine. That doesn't really help, cuz what do I know, right?

However, if you thought anything bad would come of this, you'd put the kybosh on this procedure mucho pronto, right?

So, what is the surgery? Is it some exotic, odd, one in a million procedures, or is it a "common" type of thing? How many of these has this (I assume dentist) performed?

Besides, I'm sure that the person performing the procedure KNOWS you'll kick his/her ass if they muck up your little one.

It'll all be okay. But, here's a hug anyway, because, well...just because.

17. Big hugs, Left is Write. I've never heard of oral surgery at this age.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 11:40 PM by Radio_Lady
Just curious about what they will be doing. We've had some DU exchanges before this but can't recall the details... sorry.

I know how you feel. My son had small tubes placed in his ear drums when he was about two years old -- one of the first children to have this procedure done in 1971. A French doctor working at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear infirmary was introducing the procedure here in the US. My son needed the drainage that so he could hear better, have less ear infections and learn to talk. The procedure took just a few minutes and he was back in my arms. I took him home and never forgot the wide-eyed look he gave me when I spoke to him or turned on the TV set. He looked as if he was hearing for the very first time.

Same child also had to have the ureter in his penis widened. I think the procedure is called a meatotomy or something like that. That was done when he was 4 years old -- overnight in the hospital.

He's now 37 years old, married, with two sons of his own, and, of course, he doesn't remember either procedure. How time flies.

Your little boy will be fine. How lucky you are that you can get him the dental care he needs.

Let us know how things go.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

though minor it was scary having him have to go under.

25. He will be having at least one extraction, possibly two.
He will be getting two or three crowns, and the dentist will also fill several cavities.

The trouble started when he fell onto his wooden toy box and knocked out most of a front tooth some months back. That tooth became infected, and some significant decay was discovered in his four top front teeth. Another tooth broke part way also; that's the one that is questionable as to whether he'll have an extraction or another crown.

I've felt guilty for months that his dental issues are somehow my fault, though the dentist assured me it's no one's fault. He'll have a silver smile for a while, until his permanent teeth come in.

On top of nerves over the anesthesia, I feel awful for my little guy.

I really appreciate the hugs from everyone. It does help.

26. Here's our family's story -- about broken tooth troubles.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 11:33 PM by Radio_Lady
My stepgrandson was about eight years old when his mother took him sledding in a Boston park.

To make a long story short, he careened his sled right into an upright pole which was partially covered with tires, but some metal exposed.

Luckily, he didn't have any facial damage and he didn't snap his neck and die!

But he broke off BOTH PERMANENT CENTRAL INCISORS, as well as three or four other teeth which could not be saved. Essentially, he was toothless in the front of his mouth at age eight.

He's been wearing different removable appliances to replace his teeth. He's 16 now and approaching the age when dentists will try some implants to anchor artificial teeth.

When it happened, we were totally shocked at the accident. His mother blamed herself, and so did his father (they were either divorcing or already divorced at the time). But I told them, "It's only teeth -- you were lucky it wasn't worse. He could have died."

He's a great kid and very upbeat. Not the best student, however -- I think he wants to be an actor or get involved with movie production. Everybody has something to overcome in this life. That's what life is all about -- these challenges.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

47. Ohhhh, BTDT!
My little guy has to have surgery every so often to have his very small ear canals cleared. The first time I had to send him in (last year, when he was around 1 1/2,) I was SO scared. I wasn't worried about the surgery, but the whole idea of him being anesthetized terrified me. I had to wait alone in the parent's area, but luckily there was a couple with a daughter in surgery waiting there as well. I had a good chat with them and it helped pass the time. It will be OK! Hang in there. BIG hugs to you, sweetie! It'll be over before you know it.:pals:

51. Cheer up! All will be fine.
The healthier your child is in general, the healthier they will be during surgery.

My Little Cloud went in for an inguinal when he was but 2. It was the first time he was away from me. I fought back the rain clouds when he said, "Bye daddy."

Not only did I worry for hours, but when he got out, he was so under. Then he got up and despite the doctor saying he could not walk for hours, Little Cloud stood up, buckled at the knees and proudly, yet hobbled, walked down the hall way in miraculous recovery time. Again I fought back the rain clouds, this time of amazement.

Little people teach us that they can be strong.

56. Here is an update post...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x4248612

I still don't feel like myself, which I think is odd. I feel like my reaction is way out of proportion to the actual experience.

I finally got a good look at my son's mouth...that empty row where his four top front teeth were looks so strange. He seems to be okay for now (two yogurts, one fudgesicle, and a glass of milk later), but he will probably be sore when his medication wears off. My husband took tomorrow off also, and we plan to spend a quiet day with the kids.

63. To put it bluntly, they were rotting.
That sounds so ugly, and it hurts me even to say it. You could see the decay eating away at them. It all started when he fell on his wooden toybox a few months ago and snapped off one of his front teeth up to the gum. It subsequently got infected, and apparently the infection sped up the decay in his teeth.

Lucky genetics gave him super soft teeth.

Fortunately for him, his bottom teeth are much healthier. We are hopeful that the permanent teeth coming in will be a good fresh start for him.

I have been wracked with guilt, though our dentist (a pediatric specialist) has assured me that this was not the result of anything we did or did not do.

64. Dont feel guilty!
I had super soft teeth when I was little as well. My daughter has already had two little cavities and I scrub those suckers all the time! Genetics can be a b****! Give the little one lots of tlc, and if anyone asks about what happened tell them he is an avid hockey player and took a puck to the mouth! :D

61. Hugs to you and your son. Best wishes to you both and I am sure
everything will be just fine. Take deep breaths and think peace and love..that usually calms me.
