Should I write a LTTE regarding shopping carts and handicapped
parking spots.

I went to Target last night, and nearly all the handicapped spots had carts in them, I had to get out of my car to park. I notified the store manager and the cart attendant.

I am sooooooo very very very pissed.

1. People don't get it
I gave up. If the Handicapped place at my store is filled with crap, I go elsewhere and call the store manager.

And you should see where they put the one indoor spot at Whole Foods :grr: Right next to where the 'too-lazy-to-carry-their-own-groceries-to-the-car' pick up point is. You have to wait in a car line to get to it and wait for someone to let you in to get out.

2. Not just the handicapped spaces
It's common courtesy not to leave the cart you just used in a parking space. It belongs in the carriage corral. That is where it will be sure not to ding anyone's car.

Use a cart, put it in the corral.

3. It's different here ...

in some of Europe. You have to put usually 1$ or 2$ into the cart to unlock it from the carriage corral, and if you're done, you just bring it back into the carriage corral and can release the money again. Seems to work; you don't see abandonded carts anywhere.

4. That is an excellent idea
We have carts at the airport like that.

I think most Amurkins are used to having free use of the carts so that idea would not fly!

6. some shopping centers in cities here are like that
I've seen it in upstate NY... I think the idea is to prevent the homeless from taking the carts. :(

I think you should definitely write the letter.

7. aldys does that, only it is a quarter
and it is still free, because you get your quarter back when you bring the cart back. But that would make a wal-mart parking lot even more congested.

18. It is an excellent idea indeed.....
Except here you don't get your money back!

If we did, then I think the idea would fly.....

But that's a BIG if.......

14. Yes,
that's the same system, although it's more here, approx. 1$ for a cart. But you get it back, of course.

Aldi is German.

5. Our Target around here is very good about that. There
are never any carts in the spaces. Every time I go to Target, the buggy guy is loading them all up. It is pretty much like that everywhere around here. The people are really very good about putting them where they belong. At least with what I've seen. But that would certainly create a problem.

9. Usually our Target is pretty good too.
When I called the store manager he did tell me that keeping the carts out of the handicapped spots is a priority for them, and that he had a new attendant working that night.

11. cart corrals
I like to park far enough away from the store so that I don't get dingged- I don't need the handicapped spot yet thank goodness- but many stores the cart corrals are in the front 1/3 of the lot, so pushing it back I might as well go all the way into the store.

17. So, you're saying that you park far away so you don't get dinged,
but you're absolutely in favor of leaving a cart out in the middle of fucking nowhere, so that it can be blown into and ding someone else's car? A ding which the grocery story will then likely have to pay for? And for which after the store has to pay for a few hundred of them, our grocery prices go up?

I worked in a grocery store once. It was always the fuckwads who left their carts way out in the parking lot field who caused the most problems, because THEIR carts would get picked up by the wind.

And of course, the windier and rainier it is, the more lazy self-obsessed fuckwads come out of the woodwork, and the fewer carts actually get returned to the corrals.

A friend and I, out on cart duty one rainy and windy day, happened to look up just in time to see a cart doing, I swear, a good 20 miles and hour and fly across 3 or 4 parking rows and slam VERY nicely into an SUV. Hard enough that the cart flipped after impact.

All because some self-absorbed piece of shit felt that his/her convenience was more important than someone else's car.

13. I remember when I first raised my shopping cart rant,
that there was a min-flame war within it between a couple handicapped people, one saying she was too tired when finished shopping to take the cart back because she was handicapped; another handicapped guy saying that's bullshit.

I think the stores should put cart racks closer to the handicapped stalls, but on the other hand, I firmly believe that if you go inside and walk a mile or two and shop, you can still walk another hundred feet and put your goddamn cart away.

ANd I would think that handicapped people would show more concern for other handicapped people than to leave carts in the parking spots.

16. Here is sample wording
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 02:57 PM by KitchenWitch
please give me feedback before I submit it.

I went shopping at Target last night and left there very angry. I use a handicapped parking permit, and almost all of the parking spaces had shopping carts in them. I had to get out of my car to move a cart so I could legally park. I would like to ask people to please have some courtesy and walk a few more steps to the cart corral, it can really be a hardship to get out of the car to move someone else's cart, when one is already dealing with a physical disability.

19. how's this:
On (Give the date), I had a very anger-inducing experience in a store parking lot. I use handicapped stalls, and almost every one had a shopping cart in it. I ask people to please have some courtesy and walk your cart a few more steps to the cart corral to put it away. I had to get out of my car to move a cart, which is an unnecessary hardship when one is already dealing with a physical disability.

And it might help, just so it doesn't seem you're a whiner, so explain a bit more about why getting out of your car and walking a few feet is a harship. Most people might be thinking, "Oh for fuck's sake, if she can walk around the store, she can handle moving a (#&$%# cart."

21. Is this better?
On October 30th, I became angry as a result of an experience in a parking lot. I have a handicapped parking permit and almost all of the spaces had shopping carts in them. I have had a total hip replacement, and as a result, encounter a lot of physical pain. Getting out of my car to move someone else's cart is an unnecessary hardship. Please have some courtesy and walk a few steps to return your cart to the corral.

26. Hip replacement, eh?
I changed it a tad - now it sounds like you're focused only on yourself.

For some, maybe most, handicapped people, such as myself who experiences great pains do to a total hip replacement, getting out of our cars to move someone else's cart is an unnecessary hardship.

25. Home Depot does that a lot too
the guys that gather the carts park the big lumber 'carts' in the handicapped spots closest to the doors.

it's maddening.

and it really steams my bean.

27. I get angry when I see people park in handicapped spaces
who are NOT handicapped (i.e. no sticker, placard, etc. to identify them as handicapped). I work with people with temporary and permanent disabilities, so I am super-aware of this. In the building I used to work in, there were always these young, very healthy, definitely NOT handicapped people who would park in the handicapped spots. The police couldn't do anything, as the lot was considered the "private property" of the building complex's owner. So I contacted the property manager, and he gave me a bunch of big bright orange stickers, that said "you are illegally parked in a handicapped space" or something to that effect. I took great, evil joy in slapping those things on the windows of vehicles that should not be parked in those spots.

Anything that blocks handicapped spots - a vehicle not authorized to park there, shopping carts, etc. -- should be cleared asap. Kitchey, definitely send your letter!
