1517: Protestant Reformation begins as Martin Luther nails his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg.

1864: Nevada is admitted as a state, although its population was too low to meet legal requirements; Lincoln had pushed the illicit action through Congress to help ratify the 13th (anti-slavery) Amendment to the Constitution.

1918: Spanish flu-virus kills 21,000 in U.S. in one week.

1941: Mount Rushmore is completed.

1950: Earl Lloyd is the first African-American to play in National Basketball Association (NBA) game when he plays with the Washington Capitols.

1967: California governor Ronald Reagan denies press reports that a "homosexual ring" is operating out of his office in Sacramento.
