Since when did cats eat ham?
The cats at my girlfriends found a plastic bag with ham. They dragged it to the floor, chewed through the bag and had a feast. Is ham safe for them? It sure seams unnatural.

I don't know anything about what's healthy for cats but from what I hear he's pretty healthy.

38. Meat is meat.
That's what cats eat. Ham's pretty tasty stuff, so I don't see why your cat wouldn't try to shake you down for a piece.

How do you give pistachios to a cat? Do you break them up, or do the cats chew them up?

15. our fat little cat never misses a meal...
a grey tabby, she took up residence in our back yard- she was a little runt, but once we took her in she ballooned up to the point that she has difficulty geting up onto the couch, and anything higher is totally out of bounds...she hasn't learned to eat by the food bowls yet- she sleeps next to the toilet.

and i have no idea why.

5. Ten pound cat preys upon 400 pound hog.
Considering what else a cat will eat, processed meat doesn't seem too bad, as long as it wasn't spoiled.

I agree with you, though. I often think about my puppies and how ten-inch tall terriers unnaturally eat cows hundreds of times their size. It's unnatural that a dog the size of a rat eats a cow the size of ... well, a cow.

or Church's new spicy stuff. Bring it in the house and he is all over you.

I once had a cat that would raid the garden for tomwtoes and another one that liked asparagus and green beans.

I have had three cats that loved corn on the cob, too.

23. It's Perfectly Fine
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 08:36 AM by ProfessorGAC
There are meat & fish products in every cat food made. They're omnivores and eating meat is completely natural.

The website for PetPlace.com has a list of things dogs and cats should not eat. It's pretty short for both beasties. For instance, chocolate, onions and grapes are about the whole list for dogs!

Check it out. You'll be surprised at how few foods pets shouldn't eat. My dog eats every vegetable i've ever given him, except for 2: Raw cauliflower and raw celery. He'll eat both cooked, but they must feel weird on his tongue when they're not cooked.

Have no fear! Ham is ok.

41. They're carnivores, actually.
They'll eat certain vegetables for whatever weird reason, and dry food probably has quite a bit of some kind of cereal in it, but they MUST HAVE meat to survive - it's nonnegotiable.

25. Well, think about what's in cat food...
beef, salmon, tuna...

How many members of the species Felis catus could possibly catch any of those?

Can you see a cat running down a COW? Please.

Ham is fine. It's meat, cats are carnivores.

The only meat I've heard you shouldn't feed to cats is tuna meant for human consumption. I don't remember the specifics as to why, however.

28. Perhaps "human" tuna would not be good for a steady cat diet.
Since kitty tuna has extra supplements. The Domestic cat descended from desert dwellers who probably never ate fish.

Probably an occasional taste of human tuna is OK.

35. Some cats will eat anything.
Some won't eat human food at all, like my parent's one cat. She'll eat a bit of chicken once in awhile but she usually turns her nose up at it.

My dog will eat anything. She even sits next to me and begs me for toothpaste while I'm brushing my teeth (don't worry, I don't give her any). But my other dog doesn't beg much at all.

I always thought it was kind of odd that this particular cat wouldn't eat Schaller and Weber liverwurst when most cats would steal it from the fridge if they could, but this one just doesn't like people food at all. Oh well.

43. If your cat was just a little bit bigger, it would kill you and eat you.
I would think any kind of meat would appeal to a carnivore...although the way people eat ham, the salt might not be too good for a cat (or a person, for that matter...) I think cats' digestive systems are set up for fresh meat.

they could bring a human down! That must be why they give some people the creeps when they stare at them!

I'm a vegetarian - 37 years - and the one thing that still makes my mouth water is the smell of bacon! I agree about the salt though, especially for older cats. I remember reading somewhere about the fat molecules being too big for cats to digest, but I think that was debunked.

My Snagglepuss loved honeydew melon. She'd knock it out of your hand to get a piece. Peanut Butter too.
