What to get our 18 yo daughter on her birthday this week
Our sweetie turns 18 this week. What are some suggestions for a birthday gift? She got a laptop on her 16th and there is no way she is getting a car this one because of upcoming college expenses. I'm thinking a really nice watch or a really nice piece of jewelry. ($200 max)

6. Not sure if you can get a "really good" watch or jewelery for
that amount, but you COULD - assuming you have any - give her a piece of your mother's jewelery (unless, of course, she isn't dead), or a piece of yours, or something that is of the family line, even a piece of furniture or whatever.

You could also, now that she will be an adult, take away her curfew and/or any other restrictions, as her birthday present. Better to do it now, and let her get used to it (and discover the ramifications of abuse of it) before she goes off to college and not only has no curfew, but has really no one watching out for her. And that assumes, of course, that she is responsible enough that you could do that.

Another option is to set aside the money, and say to her "We have money for you, for you to take a MANDATORY vacation, with a friend or more, next summer after you graduate." Tell her to take a week and drive route 66, or go to Yellowstone, or hang out at Stratford in Canada watching Shakespeare plays, or whatever the hell she likes. But send her off on something adult and fun and help establish a pattern of her knowing the importance of taking time off to go do fun things.

Shares in a green company. Electronics are too easy. Or tattoo her name on your forearm.

Mom just told me to butt out again. She says we, meaning Dads, don't understand anything about our Daughters.
