"Sixth Sense" question (SPOILER):

Okay I was just watching this again on cable. During the scene where the therapist is listening to old tapes of his session with the guy who eventually killed him, what was he hearing when he turned the volume way up high during the gap in the session when he was taking a phone call?

On edit: I was flipping back and forth channels while watching the movie... ("The Fly" was on) I think the audio tape session was from when his patient was still a child. I wasn't sure if the implication was that the speech that could be heard in the background represented some kind of ghost voices that that patient had been able to hear also... it's been quite a while since I'd seen the film.
