my vote:

This Used To Be My Playground -Madonna

(Inspired by earlier Phil Collins thread... who will go down as the Most Boring Musician of All Time)

8. I have most of their CDs
I like both Peter Gabriel-led and Phil Collins-led Genesis. I even like the Genesis albums when they hit the top 10; it was very well constructed pop music.

78. "I Can't Dance"
is the suckiest, most annoying song ever "written."

Sorry, but it is. And I have a couple of albums. But after about 1981, they sucked. HARD.

33. agreed -- but it does provide for a great scene
in "American Psycho":

'Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.'

62. "Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?"
Paul Allen: They're OK.

Patrick Bateman: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83,I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consimante professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

Paul Allen: Hey Halberstram.

Patrick Bateman: Yes, Allen?

Paul Allen: Why are their copies of the style section all over the place, d-do you have a dog? A little chow or something?

Patrick Bateman: No, Allen.

Paul Allen: Is that a rain coat?

Patrick Bateman: Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Patrick Bateman: Hey Paul!

Patrick Bateman: TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD! YOU, FUCKING BASTARD!

84. "The Machinist" is about as dedicated to your craft as it gets
kinda puts De Niro's fattening up for Raging Bull to shame. Great movie too and I'm looking forward to a second viewing.

(Also, can't big up The Machinist without a plug for Brad Anderson's creepy-as-fuck previous film Session 9.)

9. Against the Wind
Though "This Used to be My Playground" has to be in the Top Ten.

And as much as I love George Harrison, "I've Got My Mind Set on You" ranks pretty high too. I remember a parody of it that went "This song is Just Six Words Long" (but that, of course was 7 words.... )

59. I think I have the winner. 'Muskrat Love' Captain and Tenile. Lyric below.
Muskrat, Muskrat, candle light Doing the town
and doing it right in the evening
It's pretty pleasing Muskrat Suzie, Muskrat Sam do the jitterbug
out in Muskrat Land And they shimmy...
Sam is so skinny And they whirl and they twirl and they tango
Singing and jinging a jango
Floating like the heavens above
Looks like Muskrat Love.
Nibbling on bacon, chewing on cheese Sam says to Suzie,
Honey, would you please be my Mrs?
Suzie says yes with her kisses
Now he's tickling her fancy,
rubbing her toes muzzle to muzzle now,
anything goes as they wriggle,
Sue starts to giggle

It took me a long time to think of one. I kept thinking of boring songs but would then realize that they couldn't really be considered "pop". Most pop, even if it's annoying as all get out, isn't boring. But finally I thought of this song. Why was this song a smash, multi-chart hit when it's one of the most boring songs ever created? I've never figured that out.

81. Funny "Hey Jude" story.
My brother was about 13 or 14 when it came out.

My dad had been stationed in the Philippines, so my mom, my brother, and me went to go live with my grandmother for awhile. My mom's younger sister was also still living at home.

She got SOOOOOOOO sick of hearing my brother play his 45 of "Hey Jude" over and over, she went and buried it out in the backyard!

He promptly went out and bought a new copy. But at least she had a day or so of peace.

67. "People are still having sex"
By La Tour. 1991. One drumbeat, one baseline, no discernable melody, other than an occasional pointless riff for effect.... Instant dance hit, of course.

72. Missing You by John Waite
...
And there's a storm that's raging
Through my frozen heart tonight
I hear your name in certain circles
And it always makes me smile
I spend my time
Thinking about you
And it's almost driving me wild
And there's a heart that's breaking
Down this long distance line tonight
I ain't missing you at all
Since you've been gone away
I ain't missing you
No matter what I might say...

74. Winds of Change
Scorpions.

I was in a cab once in Bali driving around the island and the cabbie asked if i wanted to hear music.

"Sure" I said, and he popped in a tape.

It was this song. 3/4s of the way through the song it would flip to the B side... also this song. And back and forth we went for hours. I didn't have the heart to tell him how much I wanted to kill us both.

75. There's too much Phil bashing on DU
I can see calling his 90s stuff boring (typical adult contemporary stuff), but his 80s stuff is the very essence of 80s (which, of course, is a good or bad thing depending on what kind of person you are). I'll somewhat agree with Madonna, though. I think she got boring after Like a Virgin.
