8. Yup !!!
don't do that ... spammers love to know that your account is still active and that you actually read your email ... and by responding, that's exactly what you're telling them ...

another helpful tip is that you should never give out your "main" email address to a vendor ... your address will be peddled all over the place until the end of time ...

a better approach is to get a hotmail or yahoo account or some other free email account that you can use just for online purchases and things like that ... and even on these accounts, it's a good idea to be somewhat discreet ...

9. Don't. That just lets them know they hit a live one.
Do this: Disconect from the web, then delete them. If you open any of them it sends info back to the source. That is what I did and the flood died down after a week or so.
Also do not use Outlook. Outlook is the spammers friend.

6. I was getting hundreds per day but
found free software that is very effective. My isp
told me about it. It is found at www.ad-aware.com The first
time I ran it I had over 500 files that it eliminated. The ads have stopped. It takes less than three minutes to run. The only catch is that you have to individually check a box by each file to have it removed.

10. Thunderbird. Best email software you can get
Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 07:07 PM by jpgray
And then Mozilla Firebird is the best browser you can get. :)

edit: And they are both FREE!

edit 2: And don't forget Adaware 6 (also free) to get rid of those cookies and data miners.

12. Don't even open your email
If its web based that is. Just by the pics loading up in the email it tells them the account is a real one and active. Hotmail has recently blocked the loading of pics in their email just for this purpose, don't know if any of the other webbased email services do this.

I have 2 email accounts that I use, actually more like 5. I have one that I paid for (expressly so I could join DU, but I use it for other things now), and the others I use when I sign up for something that needs an email address. That way, only the people I know can email me at my "real" addy, and the junk just gets sent to the other ones.

BTW, they need to bring back drawing and quartering as a punishment just for email spammers. Oh, and the pop up ad companies too.

14. A couple email accounts are good to have.
I have a Hotmail account for the public. Had it for seven or eight years, so I'm on every spam list in the universe by now. With their new filters, much of the shite has been cut down to a trickle.

Another email account elsewhere, I use for my wee website. A spam magnet, but I do receive a couple legit messages a year.

My personal email is only given to friends, or in the rare case for work emergencies. Nary a spam has soiled that inbox.
