Speaking of burial
My mother, who is in a nursing home and possibly nearing death, although she has said she will outlive me, wants to be buried at sea. She wants her ashes to be taken out to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean aboard the same ship used for JFK Jr.'s body and have President Reagan speak at her eulogy. I already have her tombstone and burial plot paid for next to her parents who she hated.

Obviously I need a plan B. So...is it wrong for me to plan to have her cremated and have her ashes strewn at the spot on the beach in Maine that she loved so well?

1. I think your plan B sounds very nice

It's the next best thing to her plan.

on edit: hopefully you can sell the existing plots so as to not lose that investment.

2. Is it cheaper to do the ashes or stick with the plot you've got?
Is there anyone who might buy a plot next to your grandparents?

3. No it's not wrong.
Is it possible to speak with your Mom about this? To suggest the beach in Maine option?

If it isn't, I'd still go with that plan since it's a place she loved.
My Mom didn't give me any instructions - just cremation - so over the protests of my sibling - and all alone except for the crew on a
boat I hired for an hour -I took her ashes to the same coordinates where my father's had been scattered a few years earlier. As we turned back toward shore, a school of dolphins started to play and jump over a rainbow on our wake...so I knew all was well.

8. only 'happy' tears...
it signaled that she was 'happy' there. She had told me she was going to 'dance' on the other side...

Blessings back.

4. No, of course it's not wrong to honor your mother's wishes
and have it involve the ocean, instead of doing the traditional land burial thing. Your plan sounds lovely.

Good luck, though, on getting Ronald Reagan to come back from the dead to speak at her service.

We can only do so much, afterall! ;)

6. I think her request sounds eminently reasonable
Should be simple (and cheap) to round up that boat - as for Ronnie, you'll obviously have to engage him through a medium but that shouldn't be a problem.

You're just being difficult. ;)
