I have a funny college story
For one year of college I went to a small private Lutheran college, and one of the requirements was to take two religion classes. In fall of my freshman (and only) year there, I took "Intro to Christian Theology".

This was back in the late 1980s and they were just beginning to figure out what caused AIDS. The Minister and Professor of the class was ranting one day about how AIDS was God's retribution for sin and gay sexuality. So I posed a question. "Why is it that lesbians have among the lowest incidence of AIDS?" He hemmed and hawed at that. To which I said, "Geez, that must make lesbians God's chosen people."

I actually got an A in that class, I think the professor enjoyed the challenge.

7. Way to go!
I remember that was the fundie line of the day back then. Amazing such an educated person actually believed that shit. But us Lutherans can be just as nuts as any fundie.

8. It really depends on what branch of Lutheranism you are referring to.
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 02:22 PM by suzbaby
I was raised Lutheran and both my parents and I are democrats. There are two branches of Lutheranism, the Missouri Senate and the ELCA. The Missouri Senate (if I recall correctly) branch are the conservatives and may be the "nuts as any fundie" to which you were referring. However, the ELCA is much more liberal and open minded.
There are nuts in any branch of religion...just a thought.
Edit: I just noticed that you said "us Lutherans" heh....maybe I was a bit rash. My apologies.

9. Sorry about that.

But I was raised in both the LCMS and ALC now the ELCA. There are more conservatives in the LCMS but the ELCA has some as well, like those who see nothing wrong with Focus on the Family, or the Promise Keepers to name a couple things.

There's also the Wisconsin Synod who's supposedly more conservative than the LCMS.

10. Some of my coworkers are Wisconsin synod
Although these coworkers don't appear like the Fundamentalists who I knew in Ohio (may be culturual issues though), they appear to be a sexist organization. For example, a coworker's daughter graduated from a Wisconsin Luthern K-8 school. She wrote a prayer for graduation, which was given to a male student to pray because women weren't allowed to lead prayer in public.

12. I went to a WELS wedding
(WELS = Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod)

The bride and groom were not allowed to kiss in church.

11. I think that any Christian religion has both liberals
and conservatives.
The ELCA church I went to was pretty open minded. I never thought anything of it at the time, but women were given an equal role in the church and encouraged to be a part of all decision making processes.
But then, my parents retired to a different state and the town they moved to was very small and conservative. The new church my parents attend is also VERY conservative. My mother was told that she couldn't sing the liturgy because that wasn't something women did. Oh was I mad! I attended a service with them when I came to visit and the Pastor (a man who didn't even have a high school education) was telling the congregation that the amount of abortions in the world was a sure sign that Satan had infiltrated the human race.
I was just shocked because this was suppose to be the same religion I was raised in, but the two churches seemed like night and day. My parents still attend simply because there is no other church to go to in the new town they live in.
I see what you mean about there being conservatives in the religion (I've experienced it!). I just also think that could be true of most Christian religions. There are liberals and conservatives in most branches.
There are nuts everywhere. :)
