Thursday night I came out of my rehearsal and passed by a car in the church parking lot, engine running, with 2 women in it. They appeared to be sleeping. One woman was reclining in the front seat, and the other was leaning forward with her head resting on the steering wheel. The guy I was walking with looked closely at them and said, "I hope they aren't dead." Though I was a little concerned, I said that they were probably waiting for someone to come out of rehearsal. Then I joked, "Well, we'll know for sure tomorrow night, if we come back and they're still here!"
Well when I came back for rehearsal on Friday, there they were, in the same parking spot, engine NOT running, in the same positions they were in the night before. I lost it...I was convinced that I'd just seen my first dead people in a parked car. I caught a passing colleague with a cell phone, explained the situation; and she was ready to dial 911. Then I pulled up what vague semblance of common sense that remained in my head and rapped loudly on their window to be sure that my worst fears were true, and they really were dead.
No response.
By this time, several people had congregated; and they were all saying "Oh my gods" and "Oh how awfuls" and my heart sank. But I rapped again, not wanting to believe what I was thinking; and the driver popped up with a horrified expression on her face.
She rolled down her window and started begging me to let her stay there. She said her friend had broken her neck several months ago, and they had no place to live. I barely understood what she was saying...I just told her I was sorry to wake them, and explained why I felt I needed to check on them.
I was so glad they were alive that it didn't seem to matter that I'd just made myself look like the world's biggest fool!
