I think Google Earth could possibly be the most educational thing
I've ever seen.

Wow. Look at how tiny and lonely Bermuda is. It looks like it's going to sink any second.

And, I'd never even heard of the Cape Verde Islands. I'd love to visit, though.

There are so many interesting things out there. This is just the greatest. I think we should all find something of interest on Google Earth and point it out....we could just give the latitude and longitude...

2. I don't think it was that bad.
You don't download most of the images to begin with...as you look around, it downloads from Google, and the picture slowly shows up.

So my system is too old.

5. I'm hoping that kids are using this in schools.
Just sit them down in front of it and ask them for a paragraph about anything they found interesting. Could practically spend a whole semester on it.

10. I just dl'd it last week. Amazing. It's funny how if a boat left a big
wake or the shadows of other buildings really affect the readability of an image. And when you pivot and mess with the 3D you can get a real good look. Too bad some of those images are two or more years old. Now I know the government can count the freckles on my bald head in real time.

13. I agree
Here is something to try - 3D building mode. Over the big cities in the U.S., you can tilt so that you are in the downtown area. Very cool.

My only knock on it, and I assume this will change in time - most of the bells and whistles seem to work only for the U.S. and Canada. For example, you can't get 3D building mode in London or Paris, so you can't fly past Big Ben or the Eiffel Tower. Also, Calcutta, where my wife is from, has very poor resolution for the major population and cultural center that it is.

15. Go check out Tikrit, Iraq.
About 200 miles northeast of downtown Tikrit, you can CLEARLY see our military base!

Didnt Geraldo get kicked out of Iraq for giving away the location of our troops live on Faux News?

I'm almost afraid to put it on my home PC. I'd never have access to the computer again.

26. Not only did I see the base that doesn't exist...
...I saw the massive desert runways bordering the base and what looks like a couple of jet fighters ready to scramble and intercept anyone wily enough to slip past the almost-omnipresent security jeeps that patrol the perimeter of Area 51.

27. THEN CHECK THIS OUT-
Edited on Thu Oct-13-05 09:32 PM by Gregorian
Mind you, it takes a lot of patience, or broadband.

Oops. I don't know how to attach a .kmz file, so go here and you'll see the download link-

http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/36206/page/

Hopefully this will work. If not, I can post and help out. Then when in Google Earth, on the left, under Places check the entry Our Beautiful Earth. Then at the bottom of that box, click the arrow to start the journey. Even on broadband it takes a few complete cycles before I can see what's going on. But once it's all loaded and running, it's the trip of a lifetime. You go from place to place on the globe, and see some exquisite sights.
