I live in a very conservative small town in Southern California. It kind of wears on my spirit a bit, being surrounded by racists, bigots, gun-nuts, and right-wingers....Granted, I'll run into the leftie now and then, and it makes my day. But, I just wanted to say 'Thanks!' and give a big hug to everyone involved with and on DU. It really, really makes me feel good knowing that I'm not in the minority. Being in this town makes it feel like everyone is only out for themselves, screw the needy. But, when I sign on here, I realize that I'm really part of a larger family. You all keep me going, and I can't thank you all enough.

a HUGE sign that says "The Santee Churches Welcome you!" And then list of like 50 churches.

If you look up 'liberal' or 'progressive,' it has a picture of this church.

As you probably know, all are welcome at this UU church (atheists, pagans, Religious Scientists like me, agnostics, liberal Christians, etc.).

These guys are CONNECTED. They organize many progressive events, and always know about local progressive speakers and events. Dahr Jamail spoke at this church (the independent journalist who covered Iraq).

It's about 20-25 minutes from you, I bet.

I am a both a member of the Chalice UU church in Escondido, Ca., and the Church of Religious Science in Murrieta, Ca. We may not outnumber them, but we sure have fun at our peace rally/events.

I was part of the 2,000 that marched for peace in San Diego on Sept. 24th - funnest experience I've had in a long time.

I came downstairs, and he was STILL laughing. His dad (Grandpa) hasn't called us since.

I found DU right after the election and it's been a lifesaver for me. I've met so many great people here online and had a wonderful opportunity two weeks ago in DC to meet a ton of DUers face to face. The only bad part is having so many friends all over the country that you never get to spend any real time with.

I live right smack dab in the middle of a horrid conservative state where racist, sexism, and homophobia are the norm. If you aren't all three of those things here, you are not only a minority, you are told you are unacceptable. It's so nice to be able to express views without being attacked and targeted as a bad person. It's so fucked up if you think about it. Because you are a person with compassion, you are hated and you are seen as a bad person. That seems really wrong considering the state where I live is considered a "bible belt" state. The people of this state would call Jesus Christ a bad slur against gay people and beat him to death if he dared show his face here. That's just weird, yet they think I am supposed to be like them. No way. I'll come to DU and share positive compassionate ideas with good people and there are plenty of good people with positive compassionate ideas on DU.

Welcome to DU. I hope you get the same sense of togetherness and comradery I do here.
