About your hand's length away, if you outstretch your arm. May have already set from the USA (you may see it right now if you're in the East coast).

1. Yes,
it is Venus. BTW, if you look to the left of Venus (about the 10 o'clock position) you'll see the star Antares. Over the next few days Venus and Antares will be moving closer to each other, it'll be an interesting show.

Interesting site. And they have a service where they will email you (or call you- for a fee for calls) when there are interesting things to see in the sky. People also upload pictures so after a big aurora display, it is THE site to check!

I usually keep in open on a tab at night if I know there has been a CME that is headed for earth. Tells me when to stay up late to look at the sky ;)
