Kee-ripes, PETA is at it again...
Remember when they compared meat producers to Nazis and the Holocaust?

Well, now PETA is comparing meat producers and lynchings.

For crying out loud, is there some kind of collective stupidity in the leadership of PETA?

3. Well some people just think
that life is life, and killing things is all wrong. If you think I'm a bonehead then that's fine.

6. It's true you know, but in our society we try not to think about it
Animals like cows, sheep and pigs have self-awareness. Pigs are supposed to be smarter than dogs.

8. Shhhhh
A living thing's worth is determined by its IQ, and any suggestion of equivalence between killing a cow and killing a person means you're an idiot. ;)

10. Think of the donkeys!
I would have loved to have seen the look on Arafats face when he read this letter from PETA.

Following the recent bombing in Jerusalem in which a live donkey, laden with explosives, was blown up, shocking people of all nationalities around the world, PETA has written to Palestinian National Authority President Yasser Arafat asking that he urge those who listen to him to keep animals out of the conflict.

At PETA, we strive to end violence every day. As Albert Schweitzer stated, “Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.”
PETA’s letter to Yasser Arafat

February 3, 2003

Yasser Arafat, President
Palestinian National Authority
Ramallah, West Bank
Palestinian Authority

1 page via facsimile: 972 7 282 2365

Your Excellency:

I am writing from an organization dedicated to fighting animal abuse around the world. We have received many calls and letters from people shocked at the bombing in Jerusalem on January 26 in which a donkey, laden with explosives, was intentionally blown up.

All nations behave abominably in many ways when they are fighting their enemies, and animals are always caught in the crossfire. The U.S. Army abandoned thousands of loyal service dogs in Vietnam. Al-Qaeda and the British government have both used animals in hideously cruel biological weaponry tests. We watched on television as stray cats in your own compound fled as best they could from the Israeli bulldozers.

Animals claim no nation. They are in perpetual involuntary servitude to all humankind, and although they pose no threat and own no weapons, human beings always win in the undeclared war against them. For animals, there is no Geneva Convention and no peace treaty—just our mercy.

If you have the opportunity, will you please add to your burdens my request that you appeal to all those who listen to you to leave the animals out of this conflict?

We send you sincere wishes of peace.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid Newkirk
President, PETA

yes, you fucking morans, you'll win people over to your side by being condescending to them and making spurious comparisons; people aren't smart enough to think for themselves :eyes:

14. Actually I read an article in GD the other day that got me thinking.
The article posited that PETA was going on the principle that "all publicity is good publicity" and that they deliberately do these controversial things to get press.

It really made me go "hmmmmmm."

Because, hey -- we're talking about them!

18. i don't buy the "all publicity is good publicity" tactic at all
most people feel some sort of compassion toward animals, and, if given the chance, can have a reasonable discussion about why they choose/do not choose to eat meat. all that tactics like this do is get people like me, who are already pretty far on the left, fired up about them being insensitive fuckers, and then i'll spread the word to others about what assholes they are. as far as i can tell, i don't think that's doing PETA any good, but hey, maybe some right-wingers see their ads comparing chickens to the holocaust and think "gosh, you're right, i never really thought about it that way, this really IS a new holocaust, and chickens are JUST as important as humans! what was i thinking?" they can make their point without comparing human atrocities to chickens being caged, and things of that nature. if they want to show pictures of cruelty to animals, i have no problems with them doing so, and, IMHO, they'd win more people to their side that way than by being completely insensitive pricks...

19. At this point, I'm actually wondering if there is some hidden DU bylaw..
That makes it mandatory for our fine posters to mention PETA at least every other day.

I only say this because I have always been a participant on a number of message boards and forums, and I have to say that DU is, I think, the only one with members consistently bringing up PETA on a regular basis.

I'm rather baffled by it, actually. Especially since I don't see a lot of people exclaiming their allegiance to the organization... one could expect a certain degree of dissent if someone posts an "I love PETA" thread...people would then likely feel obligated to respond to this type of comment. But mostly, it's just a quick personal blurb about why said poster thinks PETA is asinine, and it seems to spring forth from nowhere in particular.

20. WOW! Another PETA-bashing thread!
How original! :eyes:

Ok. For the last time before I head to Dallas for the Eagles game (which they'll hopefully win):

I am a member of PETA. So are many members of DU. PETA is, in fact, a sponsor of DU. Frankly, none of your witty retorts ever change our minds about PETA - all it does is make us feel like we're not accepted or respected here at DU. Is that what you're trying to do? Make us PETA supporters feel like kooks and loonies and like we have no place here? If I wanted to deal with this bullshit everyday I would do to Free Republic. Just because *YOU* do not agree with PETA doesn't mean others do not. Last I checked here at DU, all were welcome. If all are welcome, that means that all should be able to come here and not be bashed every other day because the majority do not like a particular group that the minority belong to. Yes, we all know most of you don't like PETA. So why can't you just move on with your life? Trust me, we don't need to be reminded every 48 hours how much you all hate PETA. We know, and we don't care. We still support *most* (but of course not all) of what they do.

And you know what? There are a lot of things I'd like to call raging meat-eaters on. I'd like to call them some choice names, especially the ones who claim that *we* are the ones who are intolerant lunatics. But I don't, out of respect for your choices in diet, lifestyle, etc. PLEASE respect MY choices, even if you do not respect some of the groups we belong to. I don't like the NRA, but I don't go out of my way to bash the many DUers who belong to the NRA. It isn't fair and it isn't progressive-minded at all. It is just so juvenile every time one of these threads pops up (and let's not forget the obligatory 72 posts about "PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!" :eyes:

And finally, these threads never end up producing any kind of productive discussion, and you damn well know it. It only always ends in a flame war. So why even bother? These threads about PETA only end up being a bash-fest of many DUers, and they are redundant and getting VERY old.

Anyway. I have a plane to catch. Christ, what passes for "progressive tolerance" these days is really astonishing...

22. Actually, you're wrong.
PETA is comparing the treatment of animals in the slaughterhouse to the treatment of people. It's not comparing animals to people. It's intent, action and mindset.

Some folks don't see it, but that's what it is.
