1. I used to think it would be neat to have a pet Orang-Utan
I would teach him to skin up. I suppose, he'd want to have a hit on the spliff too. Only fair.

It's all moot now.

2. Given that you live w/ Evita
I'm betting you won't have a pet bat anytime soon.

6. She's already had the taste of bat
so, um, no.

I'd bring a pet bat home and Evita will be like "OOOOOO, Take-out!"

4. How would you leash a pet bat?
And could you teach it to do things like "fly in a circle"?

Also - would you have to become nocturnal just to take the little guy for walks?

Seriously, I like bats too. I rescued a young bat once that was trapped in my house. It may have been dangerous, but I had the guy perch on my finger while I took him outside.

7. You need to come back to Austin.
We have the largest colony of Mexican Free-Tail bats in North America.

8. I would have loved to have seen it
we saw plenty of bats in Costa Rica. This boat cruise we took we would go under large branches and you'd see them hanging there!

10. I visited Carlsbad Caverns when I was a kid
Apart from the caves themselves (which have to be one of the wonders of the world for their size) the most interesting thing about them was the large bat colony in the non-tourist part of the cave. You could smell it from far off, for their guano droppings. At dusk at the entrance, I watched as several million bats emerged, like a dark cloud of smoke. I think these were insect-eating bats, good for society.

14. Visited a bat cave in Topolabamba Mexico this year
100,000 Mexican Free-tailed Bats in a cave overlooking the bay. Extremely cool, They were flying all over the place and covered the walls like a carpet. The smell was enough to knock you down.

17. I've read stories about cave explorers in bat caves in Mexico
I used to be heavily involved in spelunking and read quite a few books on the subject. There are supposedly caves in Latin America where the bat droppings are so plentiful and so rich because of the rich diet of the bats that the floor beneath them is covered with layers of centipedes and other troglophile critters like cave scorpions. The cave explorers are literally ankle deep in crunchy writhing insects as they explore those passages. In vampire bat caves, which they also have in Mexico, the explorers have to splash through a soft black glistening slime from the digested blood droppings of the vampire bats overhead.
