...Lots of knucklballers, Louis Tiant, Sam McDowell, etc.

There was simply better pitching then, IMHO.

Ball wasn't as "lively" then, either.

2. From those stats
he walked a lot, and scored a lot of runs. Probably pitchers pitched around him a lot, but whoever hit behind him often got him around to home plate.
