Depressed Writer Seeks Release from the Institution that is DU
I'm lazy. More mentally oppressed from years of depression, anxiety, and trauma. No more about that, for now, lest we need a procession of violins. ;)

I'm a graduate student. I study mass communication. I have a background in television, albeit a less than auspicious one. After completing my MA next May, I want to find sweet release from our nation's institutions. I want to write. I want to do voice-over work. I want to discover the poetry of thriving somewhere outside of the "musts" of society.

And yet I'm lazy. This is not to say that completing a Master's requires little effort, nor did my journey in the television industry ride without bumps. Yet one institution still stands in the way - my addictive electronic haven - Democratic Underground.

How often do I read the news? Often enough, I should say, if it were true. Yet I obsess. How often must I read the opinions of those like-minds who read the same news? Again, I incessantly click. I click then repeat.

I must escape this prison - yet how? How do I leave the institutional world of media, politics, and public opinion in order to craft my own? How do I finally release my obsession and travel onward, unburdened?

I ask you for your help.

Many graces,

Writer.

1. Cancel your cable TV and internet access.
Read two newspapers each day.

3. Actually that's not a bad suggestion.
I hardly watch television, but after I complete graduate school I might look into cancelling our broadband access.

Thank you, Redstone.

5. It's called an "Off" switch.
Use it.

Then go take a nice long walk. Play with a puppy or kitty. Go see a movie. Go mall-walking. Go to DQ and have a banana split. Put a Pink Floyd cd on.

It's easy.

6. I could listen to Pink Floyd for hours on end.
He's good for the inner-sanctum.

7. My dear Writer.......
I too have grappled with the same issues as you have....

How to escape DU? It calls me.....the siren song lures me into its arms.......

My feet lead me up my stairs to my study where my computer sits.....

It is so very compelling.....how to break the spell?

I don't know...

Good luck to us both......
