try to answer politely - but not necessarily conversationally - I really don't talk by PMs much - prefer "on the boards" - thus it isn't much of an issue. Only once - years ago - did someone try to pull me into a really odd drama and was rather persistant that I respond did my "polite - but not begging a contiuation of the conversation approach" not work.

I started getting the occasional PM with links to strange websites. I usually just wrote back 'Thanks for the link' and ignored any further PMs. I figure it isn't rude to ignore it since I didn't ask for it, but I would suggest that if any PMs cross the line you should alert on them...

It's just like in the "real" world when you pull someone aside and say I have something I would like to talk with you in private...
