Don 'Get Smart' Adams Dies- RIP Agent 86
http://smh.com.au/news/people/get-smart-actor-dies/2005/09/27/1127586821325.html

Don Adams, the wry-voiced comedian who starred as the fumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart in the 1960s television spoof of James Bond movies Get Smart has died. He was 82.

Adams died of a lung infection late yesterday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, his friend and former agent Bruce Tufeld said today, adding the actor broke his hip a year ago and had been in ill health since.

As the inept Agent 86 of the super-secret federal agency CONTROL, Adams captured TV viewers with his antics in combating the evil agents of CHAOS. When his explanations failed to convince the villains or his boss, he tried another tack: "Would you believe...?" It became a popular catchphrase.

Smart was also prone to spilling things on the desk or person of his boss Thaddius (actor Edward Platt). Smart's apologetic "Sorry about that, chief" also entered the American lexicon. The spy gadgets, which aped those of the Bond movies, were a popular feature, especially the pre-cell-phone telephone in a shoe.

And to reference another thread about early crushes, his girl Agent 99 Barbara Felden was my first crush. And lets not forget Don's immortal voice work for.... Tennesee Tuxedo, another early crush.

3. Eddie Albert, Bob Denver, Don Adams...they say these things happen in 3s.
I've seen EVERY episode of Green Acres, Gilligan's Island, and Get Smart...at LEAST a half-dozen times EACH.

We have plenty of living ACTORS and ACTRESSES, but we've run woefully short on living LEGENDS.

6. Remeber the 'cone of silence'
Smart insisted on using it and Chief never wanted the malfunctioning spy tool used.

Cracked me up.

Dick Gautier as Hymie the robot was hilarious

11. Would you believe ... left the building?
Get Smart was one of the best shows of its time. Adams as Maxwell Smart and Ed Platt as "The Chief" in the "cone of silence" was one of the funniest bits ever. You could see the genius of both Mel Brooks and Buck Henry (both producers) in that show. David Ketchum as the always-hidden "Agent 13" was a riot too.

Don Adams really seemed to lose it after Get Smart. Does anyone remember that ultra-creepy "Don Adams' Screen Test" show that lasted one season in 1975? Ugh! It was nothing more than an excuse to have hottie teenage "aspiring actresses" come on and re-enact some famous movie scene with middle-aged men. The scenes would always end with a romantic clutch. It was nothing more than a device for these geezers to french the naive little hottie. Since these hotties were my contemporaries, it really creeped me out!
