What is this called?

I've spent the last 30 minutes trying to recall the name of this and I can't do it. Any help.

What is the name of the carrier rulers and other important officials were carried on? I'm looking for the thing that had four men lifting it to their shoulders with the person 'riding' on a chair or seat on the platform.

Any help?

I think it was used in many different cultures as I recall the Lamas of Buddhism being carried in them, but I think the name I am seeking comes from the usage in the Byzantine/Ottoman Empire when the sultans used it.
