Anyone watch the expanded LOTR that's been playing on Starz?
It looks like they've restored a whole bunch of scenes that didn't make it into the theatrical release-- scenes you wouldn't necessarily realize were missing unless you'd read the book a hundred times. Very cool they should play this. Does anyone know if this is the DVD version? (I have the vcr version, and it is NOT expanded.)

1. It's either the dvd or something very similar to it.
I wouldn't put it past Jackson to make 3 versions of the same film, but it's probably the dvd.

Most of the extra scenes are great, but toward the end a couple of them are tiresome and slow down the action too long when he should be rushing toward the climax. But what a movie. Only a little over a month till Two Towers is out on video. I'll be there at dawn to get mine. I can't wait to see that again.

2. They've got an extended version out
It was released a few months after the unextended version, I guess they needed more time to edit in all the new scenes. They actually re-scored all the music, so the new scenes fit in seamlessly...

They're also going to do the same thing with The Two Towers, I think the extended version will be out sometime in the fall. It's supposed to have almost 45 more minutes of footage, including more time with the ents.

I think that you can get the extended version on VHS, but I'm not sure...

23. They played the extended version, which is marginally better
I thought the theatrical version was tighter, and the plot moved better.

The Two Towers is coming out in August, and its extended version is coming out in mid-Fall.

3. Yes, the extended DVD of FOTR
has those extra scenes, of Bilbo's description of Hobbits, Sam and Frodo seeing the elves leave, Boromir almost picking up and claiming the ring at the Council, etc. I love the extended version. I think Aragorn gets to cut off a few more orc heads too. I think it's about 30 minutes longer, including ;onger scenes going into Lothlorien.

There is a mistake in the scene where Aragorn is trying to talk Haldir into letting them stay a night at Lothorien: wardrobe still didn't have Legolas' costume right, and he's wearing something different and simpler for those scenes.

4. The 4 disc set is the greatest
Not only do you get the added scenes, but also you get cast and crew commentaries during the movie. Some of it was pretty funny stuff. Incidentally, the TTT extended version will be coming out in November.

5. i own the 4 disc set.
and it friggin' owns. i like the beginning with Bilbo's extended introduction. I like how there's much more of Lord Celeborn also. So all in all, it was worth the forty bucks my mom spent on it for me :-)

19. "You are being tracked."
Great spooky line. He gave me chills.

I also loved the scene of looking at Lothlorien from far away, and Boromir telling Frodo not to carry the burden of the dead.

I can hardly wait until TTT comes out. ANd then the expanded addition in November.

The four disc set is excellent. Anyone interested in film-making should watch the whole thing, including the segment with the varying camera angles on the council. That set seems to own us on Saturday nights.

6. I've already got The Two Towers on DVD...
Edited on Wed Jul-23-03 11:16 PM by Chicagonian
I've had it since February...
Unfortunately it doesn't have any commentary tracks or any other special features...except that the words "Given for your approval" keep popping up-
It's a boot made from the discs they send to Academy members at voting time.

The actual TT comes out in a few weeks, but I'll definitely wait for the expanded version in November, like I did for FOTR- the expanded version is the one they currently have on STARZ!
The expanded FOTR disc set is GREAT- it even has 5 different commentary tracks- well worth the wait and the extra bucks.

10. I see my favorite Faramir quote
Edited on Thu Jul-24-03 04:23 AM by sugarcookie
from "The Window on the West. Here is a quote about Sam that I am fond of "It was Sam's first view of a battle of Men against Men, and he did not like it much. He was glad that he could not see the dead face. He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather have stayed there in peace..."

Edit: to add text
Edit: punctuation and spelling sorry...sleepy eyes

11. I love Faramir
Not real happy with the changes made, although I understand them.

The Haldir quote I just ran across on a reread last month. Hadn't really thought about it much, but it jumped out at me this time.

14. He is definitly my book favorite
I am hoping the EE version of TTT will help redeem him in the movie version. If they don't follow the book about him in ROTK...I will be very upset. I have heard they are, but will have to wait to see. Faramir has some of the best parts and definitly the most romantic.

21. I thought
they were starting to "redeem" their presentation of his character at the end of TTT, when he sets Frodo and Sam free, underpenalty that his life could be forfeit.

22. Not enough for
fans of the the book version of Faramir. The book portrays him as a brave leader, kind and noble. It was disappointing he wasn't portrayed quite that way until he sets Sam and Frodo free. This was one of the most talked about topics after the movie came out.
I have heard the in the EE version Faramir will show more acts of kindness to Sam and Frodo. I know PJ had his reasons for making changes on film and I am anxiously waiting for ROTK. I'm no expert these are just my opinions.

12. Laz, what am I missing ....
on that 5th disc. I have the 4 disc FOTR, would it be worth my time to try and obtain that 5th disc.

Also, I hope the extended TTT will have lots of bonus features on a multiple disc set like FOTR. I especially hope there will be lots of behind the scenes information about the portrayal of Gollum.

13. Not too much...
The 5th disc is just a National Geographic special on the filming and choreography of FoTR. It's nice to look at and all, but I think the bulk of what an LoTR fan would want to look at is in the plain old Extended Edition.

I too have had The Two Towers on DVD for quite some time now. Yes, those 'For your consideration' things that keep popping up can be tiring, but overall, it's a really good dvd with the dolby digital track but lacking chapter access. I definitely do intend to get the special edition when it comes out though.

Each of the movies will have special editions which are all supposed to be around three and a half hours, except for TTT which is actually supposed to be longer at around 3:45. Even Helm's Deep is going to have like 10 minutes added to it :SWEET:. So in total, the full trilogy is going to be nearly eleven hours in length. I can't wait to set aside a day a little more than a year from now when all the DVDs are out, fire up some pipe weed and see the definitive versions of Jackson's work in one sitting. It will be sweet indeed.

16. rumour has it
That one more "super special edition" may be coming out after ROTK, basically all three re-edited, move some stuff around, treat it as one big movie.

15. not really
the 5th disc is simply the National Geographic "Beyond the Movie" special. I haven't even opened it, to be honest.

I just wanted the Argonath bookends, which are worth the money alone, IMO.
