iPod Help

I couldn't find the computer group so I'm posting it here.

I can't get my new iPod to work!!! My computer at home is older and I got the message about "non hi-speed ports". So I brought it to work where the computers are newer. Same message. I'm running windows xp on both computers. I've installed service Pack 1 after reading about the USB problem. Still get message. It recognizes my Ipod just won't let me update music to the iPod. I tried re-installing itunes because I put in the wrong serial number when I installed it the first time. I get the message that my iPod needs formatting. After 30 minutes of watching the "waiting for iPod" as it was formatting I got a transfer error. I've given up on the computer at work because I have to work.

What is installing a $300 Ipod so hard??????? My daughter talked me into buying it, hers "Works Great, no problems"!!!!!
