When An Ebay Transaction Is Completed With No Problems...
... who should be the first to leave positive feedback?

Is positive feedback equivalent to a tip or gratuity, and should it be left first by the BUYER?

Or... is positive feedback equivalent to a "thank-you-come-again", and should it be left first by the SELLER?

1. I think the seller should leave it first.
The seller is the one who receives your payment...they should leave positive feedback first. The buyers responsibility is to send payment...if you've done that in a timely manner, then the seller should leave the feedback first.

Just my .02

2. I always leave it (as buyer) when I've received the goods
As long as they're in good condition. I don't wait - I just do it and forget about it.

3. Whenever 1 side of the transaction is complete.
If I am a buyer, I wait until items arrived in a timely manner and as advertised. If I am a seller, I wait until payment is confirmed and received.

4. Ebay, as well as its patrons, use your feedback score
like a "credit rating".

I've had some people refer to my feedback and trust me to send me merchandise I've won before they got my payment. Then again, I've had sellers who refuse checks refer to my feedback and let me pay by check.

Ebay also uses feedback in determining whether or not to terminate your account.

Some people leave feedback (sellers, that is) as soon as they receive payment.

I only purchase stuff - never sell, but I always leave feedback once the transaction has been settled satisfactorily.

5. seller first...
I believe the seller should leave PF when he's received the payment, and the buyer (if warrented) leave PF when the goods arrive.

As someone who has bought and sold quite a bit, there are occasional times as a seller in which I have waited to see the buyer's remarks before I've left my own, because I got a sense he/she was a jerk.

7. I always pay immediately after winning the item, so the seller
has always been the first to leave feedback. I don't leave feedback until the item arrives and it was as described.

On one occasion, the item was different, but still nice, so it was not a big deal. On another, I never received the item, so that was a big deal.

8. IMO, the seller should leave it first
I buy and sell on eBay and feel very strongly that the buyer's responsibilty it to pay, preferably promptly. When that obligation is met, I leave feedback and also say, item shipped 9/13 or whatever.

The sellers obligation is to ship, again preferably quickly, and to be honest and thorough in their descriptions. If buying, I leave feedback based on that.

12. wow i am so impressed so many NON ebayers are posting here
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 02:04 PM by pitohui
if you are not familiar w. the culture of ebay, why are you all posting on this topic

i stand amazed

it isn't a trick question

there are not TWO right answers

go to Ebay community boards and inquire

the buyer should leave feedback first, the transaction is not over so the seller cannot post any accurate feedback UNTIL the buyer has received the item and posted happy feedback

15. I'm not a non-ebayer
I have a feedback of about 85, though it would be higher if everyone actually left feedback.

Sorry if you disagree, my opinion still stands.

9. You don't leave feedback until you receive
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 01:29 PM by China_cat
whatever you bought and know that it is as advertised/works, etc. Since the seller got the payment before you got the merchandise, the seller leaves first feedback.

Feedback scores are a good way to make sure you aren't getting ripped off. A regular seller with feedback scores of 95% and above are your best bets. It's just a good way for customers to say 'this is a responsible, ethical merchant'.

Feedback for you as a buyer tells other merchants that you might do business with that 'here is a responsible buyer who won't try to stiff you on the transaction'.

10. buyer should leave feedback first WITHOUT QUESTION
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 02:00 PM by pitohui
as a seller i will not leave feedback for the buyer who does not care enough to leave feedback for me

feedback for the buyer is not meaningful anyway

it is only of value to the seller

so if you as a buyer can't be bothered neither can i

indeed it is recommended by all ebay sellers that NO seller leave feedback until the buyer has responded because the transaction ain't over until the buyer signs off that she's happy

there are actually scams by dishonest buyers where they get seller to leave feedback first then extort a refund a from the seller by threat of leaving a bad feedback

I would not leave feedback until the buyer left it first. I have reputation to protect, and some fools will leave negative feedback without first trying to work any problems that might arise. If you've already left positive fback for the buyer then what incentive does the buyer have to work out any problems.

The buyer must leave feedback first.

16. As A Semi-Part-Time Seller, I Think As You Do...
<< some fools will leave negative feedback without first trying to work any problems that might arise. If you've already left positive fback for the buyer then what incentive does the buyer have to work out any problems >>

When I review feedback left for others, it seems that most of the negative feedback comments were hasty and a rush-to-judgement. As though negative feedback would magically solve the problem because they didn't have the forethought to simply EMAIL the seller first.

I've also seen negative or neutral feedback left for others because they didn't understand that "Media Mail" is the equivalent of "Parcel Post" which means up to NINE business days delivery time. Yet they try to punish the seller with negative feedback because they assume the seller is to blame for the delay... when it's actually the post office.

14. It depends on the seller....
Some leave it as soon as the buyer pays. Others wait until the buyer leaves feedback first. As a buyer, I won't leave feedback until I receive the purchased item. I've had sellers wait and I've had sellers post feedback immediately.
