Is anyone else disturbed by the way Alicia Bridges sings the word
"Action" in the song "I Love the Night Life?"

She sings it like this: "Ak-Shawn."

I've always felt really uncomfortable with the way Ms. Bridges renders that line. Like, it makes me feel funny and stuff.

Am I alone? Is there any ak-shawn around here?

Nah, I'd rather see an AK-shawn film.

2. I met her 20 or so years ago
She was signing records at a store I happened to be in; she looked like Susan Powter's meth head sister. I had her sign my Husker Du "Metal Circus" EP I had just bought at a record store down the block instead of whatever record she was peddling; I don't think she even noticed.

Wish I still had that..

"Uh, that's Alicia Bridges', dude."

Neither of them make a lick of sense, though.

I think we can all admit the lyrics to said song are sub-par.

17. It's true. The guitarist is playing that hi-treble chicken scratching
associated with both James Brown and disco. In "I Love the Night Life," his axe is lower in the mix than it is on James Brown's records, however.

15. The drummer plays sixteenth notes on the hi-hat and...
opens the hi-hat to create a "swishing" sound in between the bass drum hit on the one and the snare drum hit on the two in each bar.

Also, there are disco-esque strings all over the tune and the bass player is playing eighth note octave skips. AND she mentions the "disco round" in the chorus.

I think the BPM is also 120...isn't the typical disco BPM 140? I dunno.

I punish myself in the winter by riding my hamster wheel and trying to keep up with "YMCA" and "MacArthur Park".

But my road cadence has increased to 91 RPM+ this year so it's worth the pain.....

That's the funniest thing I've seen tonight.

And I too, feel kind of funny about it, but it's not as weird as the "I love the nightlife, I've got to boogie aaHHHHHHHHOOOHHYYAAY" or whatever!

Another artist who does fun with phonics is Tori Amos. She's got dozens of them.

19. I think Alicia Bridges may have been the most histrionic singer
since the beginning of time. During the last chorus it sounds as if her Thorazine has worn off and the bad acid is ruhing back into her spinal column at an alarming rate. I almost feel sorry for her, then I realize that she was Susan Powter before Susan Powter was Susan Powter and those sympathetic emotions are quashed like mosquitos on the grill of a barrelling Vovlo station wagon.

22. did you ever notice how many singers purposely mispronounce
words? They will pronounce a word correctly when they talk but then when they sing they mispronounce it. Also people with northern accents when they talk put on southern accents when they sing.

40. I think that's what I find most disturbing about it.
Not that the word "ak-shawn" conjures up anything sexual; it's that feeling that far too many people with chemical abuse issues were allowed into recording studios back in the seventies and we get to hear their nervous systems degenerate before our very ears for tyhe rest of our lives on FM radio.

Creeps me out.

OMG, it was horrible! And that one song was completely out of character with the rest of it. I seem to recall that it was mostly country ... very, very bad country.

Or maybe it was what is known in the South as 'beach music' (do your own research). Can't remember.

55. You could be right.
I always assumed that she meant a "Disc-Go-Round," like a Disco version of a Merry-Go-Round.

Shit, she may not have actually sang ANY words during that part...she may have been too busy shovelling enormous mounds of Cocaine into her honker to make up words and those sounds she made were reactions to the drug closing up her throat. Those were different times, as Lou Reed said.
