Any Moxie drinkers out there?
What's it taste like. I saw a thing on the Food Network about the stuff. I guess they have a Moxie parade and everything in Maine.

1. I drink Moxie all the time, but I have to warn you:
it's an acquired taste. In my experience, if you didn't have it as a kid, you'll think it tastes like medicine. (It's flavored with gentian.)

I like the stuff, but my wife and kids won't touch it.

2. The only way I can describe it........
....is it tastes like burnt leaves. Not that I have any idea what burnt leaves taste like.

I only had it once about a year ago. I was so repulsed I actually poured the bottle out.

3. You're from Rhode Island, home of "gaggas" and coffee milk,
and you don't like Moxie?

I'm a bit surprised.

5. So do you eat gaggas, or just clam frittas?
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 11:10 PM by Redstone
I'm allergic to shellfish, so the fritters are out, but we do cross the border from Connecticut for some Wieners all the Way and Up The Arm now and then.

6. Yeah.....I live right near Flo's in Portsmouth...
...so I get my fried clams from there and my hot weiners over at Rod's in Warren. Occasionally I stop at the New York System after a game at the Dunk.

7. Dammit, now I'm hungry! Hey, did you know that you can get
a damn good substitute for a Philly cheesesteak hoagie in Providence? Go to the Providence Pizza Palace, on Route 1 (I forget the street name) just a couple of blocks north of the entrance to Roger Williams Park.

I posted about this before, but can't give you a link because the Advanced Search is turned off right now.

But trust me. The place looks like a hole-in-the-wall dump, but they make a truly outstanding cheesesteak.

8. I'll have to check that out
It's over on Elmwood Ave. Seen it, but yeah, it's not the kind of joint I'd ever say "Hey, let me try this place here".

My buddy at work is always complaining he wants to find the ultimate Rhode Island cheese steak......he's obsessed with it really....

10. "Rhode Island cheese steak?" I never knew there was
such a thing. Are they really that poplular there, that they have their own subculture?

Well, dang, we learn something new every day. If your buddy has any recommendations for cheesesteaks, I'd be only to happy to hear them.

Don't let the appearance or the location of the Pizza Palace turn you off, nor the fact that it's run by Dominicans rather than Italians (or even Greeks); check it out.

11. Nah, no subculture........
...just some Philly transplants like to know where they can find them "done good" around here.

And hey, I'll go anywhere, to a place run by anyone, for a top notch "grinder".

12. I used to drink it sometimes
being from Boston originally I drank it when I was little...moved far away and drank it when I went to visit my relatives, plus when my folks would go visit I'd always ask them to bring some back for me...

But it's been about 18 years, all I remember really was it tasted liked carbonated medicine...!

14. Now that's just wrong.
Horse piss is nowhere near as fizzy as Moxie.
