63. What a Co-In-Kee-Dink!!
:-)

We named our older dog Peanut when we adopted her in 1995 from the local shelter in Pueblo, CO. She's a hound-shepherd mix, and was smaller than our cat when we adopted her - hence the name. The Eukanuba we fed her must have worked, because she's around 70 pounds today, and about the size of a small Lab.

Pearl is a chow-husky mix we adopted in 1998 from the same shelter. We named her Pearl because the color of her coat reminded us of a pearl.

Our cat Della had that name when we adopted her from the ASPCA shelter in Las Vegas.

20. Cat is Stardust
Named after David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, because both the cat and Bowie have mismatched eye colors.

Because he's a playful biter (the cat, not Bowie), he usually gets called "Little Bastard," which has been shortened over the years to "B".

56. Wow! You have a Bodhi Taog too! :)

And here I thought I was original, as I'd never heard it used before.

Since I live in a purple house (yes, it's true. 3 SHADES at that - but hey, I RENT, I don't get to pick the colors) I like to formally refer to him as:

BodhiSITttva, Lama of the Lavender Temple, or BodhiTaog, Lama of the Lavender Temple.

:)

Unfortunately, he's yet to live up to his name! He barks incessantly at the kitties, is too rough with the ferrets, and actually ATE a poor little baby bird that couldn't quite fly a few weeks ago, after stalking it across the yard... :-(

I figure he's not even 8 months old yet, so hopefully he will grow into his compassion.

Other things we call him:

Bodhi-Butt
Potato-Head
Monkey-Toes (this dog uses his paws like a cat)

and the ever popular:

GODDAMNIT!!
NO!
STOP IT!!
and
BADDOG!

lol

"Leading one on the path to enlightenment"

Our dog rather drags one there... :)

Of course, he is a sled dog. Not our lead dog by any means, but a good wheel dog. Just a pullin' machine!!

Full name (since he's a fancy dog): Marlytuk's Arctic Bodhisattva. His half-sister's is Marlytuk's Cudubhan Krishna.

31. Two rescued dogs and cat.
Teddy de Lovely, was a stray rescued on a movie set, Sean Penn movie..named after a person in the movie, is a shelty mix and a happy smile'n fool. Sir Linus Minus is a rescued toy poodle, who was nuetered on the way home, the next day my wife was given the Papers, he was a fancy show dog with a fancy name...but he was already 'Minus'. He and teddy are the closest of friends, always together. then there is Matti Mae, the cat, we found her badly mauled with a broken leg and fixed her up. she is now Queen, and the dogs are subjects. she sneeks up and slapps a paw on their head..and folds them down till she is through giving their head a serious tongue bath. they dont dare move..they all sleep together in a pile,..really cute.

33. Chloe and Smudge
My cat's name is Chloe, because when I adopted her from the shelter her name tag said "Cleo", and I'm seriously dyslexic (we dyslexics have more fnu!).

My dog is named Smudge, because some &!!#@*% low-life abandoned her on my door-step on Halloween, when I was in the process of smudging my house. It's a religious thing - don't ask. She was also about the scrawniest, most moth-eaten, most woe-begone and homely puppy I'd ever seen. "Ding Dong! Trick or treat! Hey, lady, do you know your dog got out?" "I don't have a dog.." Wrong. One look at that pathetic critter, and I turned into a Dog Person.

The heroine of my unfinished and scandalous erotic mystery novel has a cat named "Schroedinger" and a dog named "Free Dog". Those would have been my first choices, had I had time to think before the vet asked me "and what name have you picked out for this sweetie?"

51. Othello, Iago, and Neshameh

...are the kitties, respectively.

Bodhi is the puppy.

Brutus is the hamster (he's real "Girly" looking, so needed a macho name)

The ferrets are Jekyll and Heidi (already named when I got them) and Spencer - named after the man that gave them all to me.

Pooh was the hamster that died a couple of weeks ago. (so named because he was a black bear hamster - PoohBear)

The 4 remaining ratties never really got names - except for one. She's a rattie abboration - she bites! Thus christened "Vampira" - the others are known as the white one, the black one, and the black and white one. The one known as the runt died a couple of months ago.

Sugar Gliders are also yet unnamed - as nothing seems to click. I call them what their breeder called them so far - Mom, Son, and Jr. I need to get cracking on picking names for them, I guess :)

59. 3 Cats
Tigerlily - yellow eyes, tabby on top, calico on the underside. Fixed female. When Asscroft comes for me, I'll hold her out tummy first, which should also get her in the proper mood to ATTACK.

Songbell - green eyes, all black except for a white spot on his chest. Fixed male. Named by my 4 year old grandchild, a very creative little girl.

Unnamed as yet - A large white with pale blue eyes. Unfixed male who has adopted us after slinking around looking unfed and abused early this summer. Now much plumper and the other 2 have accepted him. He doesn't come in the house because he isn't fixed, but will probably get the knife this fall so he can spend the cold months inside. Waiting for my granddaughter to get back from CO to name him, since nothing has inspired me yet.

79. My cat is named Catlin
I fed her outside for five months before I was finally able to bring her inside. After the very first time, she showed up at the same time like clockwork, then started coming at night, as well. If she was late, I would wander around calling ``kitten,'' and she would often come, so I needed a name that sounded like that. I first called her Quentin, because everyone told me she must be a male, but when I finally caught her (I had to resort to using a ``have a heart'' trap) and brought her to the vet's to get checked out, it turned out that she was a spayed female. Poor little thing. She is safe, finally, and I can hear her soft snores coming from her little ``kitty house,'' right behind me.:-)

82. Don't Mean to be...., but isn't
this question much too personal...I seem to remember the Privacy Policy stating that no pets' names shall be divulged for fear of a threat to the National Security (LOL)....nevertheless...

once upon a time, the public TV station in my city had an auction, and we bid on this cute little Cocker Spaniel puppy. After a bit of hot bidding, WAY TOO MUCH for a dog, we took him home, and the kids named him for his AKC papers: Rockin' Rascal Amadeus (Rock-Me-Amadeus was the hit song then) but I goofed up the form, so he wasn't acceptable to the hoity-toity club after all--picky,picky!

Well, just like Jackie and Puff, the kids grew up, the singer and the song passed into rock&roll history classics, and poor Amadeus passed on too. One day, married kid #1 spied another Cocker Spaniel poochie that stole her heart and named him, guess what, for the artist whose song inspired the name of our family's best dog ever. He's got some paws to fill!

86. Stevie Ray Cat
Found, rescued and named by my son as a little kitten who was dumped in our neighborhood about 7 years ago. He's outlived the pets we already had - a cat named Blue and a dog named Boo and is loving being the only pet of a couple of nearly-empty nesters. Little does he know that thanks to this economy, his domain is about to be invaded by my daughter's family which includes a bulldog and two cats. He will not be pleased. If Stevie could vote he'd say Anyone But Bush, too.

to see a lot of animal lovers (and don't even think of taking this the wrong way ;-)) in DU. I've always used people's behaviour around animals as a judge of character.

And their shoes too :-)

Cats :

Dabber (from dutch verb for digging because she digs into your arm with nose and nails, ever since she was small)
And her offspring :

Markus, the alpha male
Mini, the sweet daughter
Arthas (named after Warcraft character, prince of Darkness), died in my hands a couple months back. I kicked a tree and my foot still hurts. Not kidding.

Dog : Gypsy (because we inherited her with the house we rent, she's got mixed ancestry including a french mountain dog !?)

124. Gray tabbie named Mello Yello
She was a wonderful cat - died last year at 18 years old. She was named by a child who was put under pressure to name his new cat, quickly discovered he was holding a can of Mello Yello, the rest is history.

132. Smart puppy but spoiled rotten
Never have I had a dog so eager to learn ... as long as he gets treats. Currently he's on a hunger strike ... looking for the perfect tasting dog food, which I suspect is pizza.

136. My Sheena went nuts for pizza, as well. I don't know what it is
All of my dogs have been interested in tomato sauce. My first dog wouldn't eat her own dinner if I had it on the stove. She waited.:-)

I would put a couple of pieces of pizza crusts in both dogs' dishes. Barney would take one and eat it elsewhere. My Sheena would gobble hers down and then grab his.:D

I knew she was in real trouble when she rejected pizza. I had denied it to her because she was on a strict anti-cancer diet. My vet told me that I ``shouldn't be scared yet.'' I lost her the following day.;(

He is darling. You are very fortunate. Give him the occasional pizza treat.:-)

130. Parrots?! Cool!
I recently visited someone who has a parrot. This bird is amazing! These people also have several small dogs and he keeps them in line by speaking to them in their owners' voices. LOL!

He also confounds the humans by doing the same. I have never had a bird, as I have a cat, but hope to someday. I must learn more about them, as I have had mainly dogs in my life.

I know little about snakes, though I have nothing against them. Are they friendly? I worked at an amusement park in my youth and used to chase a water snake who would sun himself back into the water, out of fear that he would be spotted and eliminated because the people running the place would be afraid he'd scare the the public. They tried to get rid of the snapping turtles for the same reason, so my boss, who liked me, let me rescue them.:-)

131. My animals all have middle names, so they know when they are in trouble.
Remember when Mom called Christopher Michael, or whatever, you know that you were in deep shit? Therefore my dogs are Skye Marie, Eeyore Frederick, and Buster Terrence. The cats are Maxwell and Fly, they don't care if they are in 'trouble' or not.

142. chewie the cat...short for chewbacca
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 11:17 AM by noiretblu
named (appropriately) for her similar personality, and resembalance in appearance. she's quite a cutie...green eyes with a mostly grey coat, speckled tannish undercoat, and a few splashes of white here and there. the ultimate feline :eyes: she wants to be alone, except of course when she wants affection :eyes: and woe unto the person who doesn't know when she wants to be alone vs. when she wants affection...she is very vocal about her prefereces :eyes:
my very own high-maintenance diva...and a real angel

145. I am so sorry. I also miss my perfect cat, Rhiannon
I lost her in September of 2001, but, obviously, she's never been forgotten. Rhiannon was an indoor cat and I miss her swatting at or chewing on my fingers while I type. I think she thought it was a game I was playing with her.;(
