Being a Computer "Geek", people come up to me for suggestions in
buying new hardware. I can quickly figure out what's best for them, regarding what their uses are and what the expect from their PCs, and how much they should pay. Often, it only takes a few sentences before I know what they want.

But buying a PC for me? One entirely different question. The books are open. I could get the best of the best of the best, but that would be stupid, and put me out AT LEAST 3000 dollars ( that's not even bothering to do the math, I just know this, and that doesn't include the pair of 24" LCD 7ms response time '800' contrast displays that the "best of the best of the best" label would require). Or I could lowball certain components until the next model is due, because I know the release cycles of the manufacturers. Or I could slowly build up a PC from my current one, but the major components all require a new motherboard, and a new motherboard requires at least a new processor and video card since AGP was killed off quick.

Then there's the whole case thing. It's a hundred bucks, maybe, but it's also a question of functionality, cooling, and my identity.

Damn, it sucks to be a geek.

Sometimes the most difficult rules to follow are the rules of no rules at all. Except for fighting and fucking, but that's for another thread.
