July 21, 2005 | On the front page of the Exodus International Web site is a photograph of several dozen men and women. The allegedly changed homosexuals, or newly minted ex-gays, are beaming at the camera, apparently celebrating their newfound freedom from homosexuality. Standing in the center of the photograph is 29-year-old Shawn O'Donnell, who was enrolled in Exodus programs on and off for 10 years.

Exodus is the umbrella organization, information clearinghouse and referral service for "ex-gay ministries." These organizations claim they can help gays and lesbians become heterosexual. Exodus was founded in 1976 as part of a backlash against the American Psychiatric Association's 1973 determination that homosexuality is not a mental disorder. Exodus leaders are embraced by the religious right, including the politically influential Focus on the Family, which holds conferences touting the success of the "ex-gay movement."
The only problem with the Exodus photo is that O'Donnell is still gay

17. Good. People need to know about this.
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 07:42 PM by Ariana Celeste
It is so disgusting that a parent could be so hateful of their childs sexuality that they would put them through this torture. It is one thing for an adult to make that choice for themself, but there are kids in there.
Kids who are already confused enough. Kids who will have to go through the rest of their lives dealing with the fact that their parents choose not to love them unconditionally. I couldn't even imagine what kind of damage that could do to someone.

Tenn. opens new probe of ‘ex-gay’ facility
Experts say children should not be forced into counseling

By EARTHA MELZER
Friday, July 01, 2005

The state of Tennessee continues to probe Love in Action, the Memphis facility that has drawn protests since a 16-year-old known as “Zach” blogged that his parents were sending him there for treatment intended to change his sexual orientation.

The Tennessee Department of Health has sent a letter to Love in Action notifying the group that it is suspected of operating illegally, according to Andrea Turner, communications director for the department.

Turner said that if the program is strictly faith-based it would not require licensing by the state, but that according to the group’s Web site, Love in Action has licensed counselors and provides services related to alcohol and drug addiction on site.

When my parents sent me to the Gay Conversion camp, I was so scared. How would they convert me from the way I was born? Thank God for counselor Steve: A closeted, undercover Gay man who taught me how to accept my sexuality.

We would explore each others bodies in so many ways.

(Okay, I can't make this a sex thread, and I'm straight so I'm not that good at writing gay porn. But you get the idea.)
