Is popular music getting better?
The All American Rejects were just on Letterman, not bad at all. Sleater-Kinney last week rocked. Are boybands and blonde divas behind us?

1. Love the Rejects
I really like The Killers too. Yes, I think a lot of the music is better than it has been in recent years.

23. Yes she does! So does Feist, whom I forgot to mention...
...although she's a slightly folky cross between Sophie B. Hawkins and Saint Etienne.

5. Probably depends on the genre
Some good rock bands seem to be getting more exposure over the last couple years at the expense of a number of not-too-great ones who were big during the early '00's.

At the same time, the fact that Jessica Simpson's cover of "These Boots are Made for Walkin'" looks to be the most heavily-rotated video currently on MTV goes pretty far in negating any argument that popular music is improving very much!

9. Well, yeah...
But you're comparing it to the days where Limp Bizkit, Korn, boy bands, and Britney Spears ruled the radio.

You still have your suck-rock bands (the ever-present Creed and Nickleback crap), and the wannabe punk bands like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte. But the days where the trend is emo and pop-punk rather than rap-metal and bubble-gum, or booty rap, is a good thing I think.

I will not immediately dismiss an emo band. Believe it or not, there are some good ones out there. (Motion City Soundtrack comes to mind, and I like Jimmy Eat World too.) Pop-punk isn't all bad either. It's when it turns into whiny "my life is so tough" crap like Simple Plan that it becomes awful.

I dunno, it seems like pop has become a dirty word for a lot of people. But some of the best songs ever made have been pop songs, and by definition very good ones, too.

I rarely if ever listen to the radio anymore. I just run the car stereo with whatever CD or MP3 CD I feel like playing that day.

11. The best-selling stuff is still pretty nasty
And it's not so much that people like crap, but that people will still pick something if they are given only a variety of crap to choose from.

14. Please everyone, tune into THE LATE LATE SHOW W/CRAIG FERGUSON...
there's a really good small small band that's just starting out called Elkland that's going to be the musical guest, and the more people that watch the better.

15. Thanx for the headsup.
I think better music is on the talk shows in one week than MTV has in a year.

17. Agreed!
Only watch MTV if you want to see Jessica Simpson's latest reality whatever or some new show about hillbilly makovers, or the latest rap video.

16. You have to go outside the corporate mainstream to find it
There is some of the best music ever being made right now, but you have to find it on the indie and DIY Labels to find it. Forget FM radio; it's been dead for years. Internet Radio, Podcasting, and the like are the true heirs of the AM and FM stations of the late 60's and early 70's...
