New Jersey wants to ban smoking in cars
:eyes:

<snip>

TRENTON, N.J. -- It's sometimes tough to find ashtrays in cars anymore.

Now, some New Jersey lawmakers want to make it illegal to light up while driving anyway. The proposal barring smoking behind the wheel faces long odds in the state legislature, but that hasn't stopped smokers from describing the proposal as a Big Brother intrusion. One Hackensack cigar smoker said politicians can tell him he can't smoke in his car when they start making his car payments.

The measure would fine drivers up to $250 if caught smoking cigars, pipes or cigarettes. Supporters said the ban is more about improving highway safety than protecting health because smoking is a distraction for drivers, much like cell phones.

New Jersey smokers are incensed over the proposed state law. Smokers complain the proposal is only a step away from banning smoking in the home.

Assembly members John McKeon and Lorretta Weinberg sponsored the bill , saying smoking is a dangerous distraction for drivers and others on the road.

New Jersey already has a year-old law against drivers using hand-held cell phones.

3. Then I suggest making it mandatory that you don't take your kids
in your car anymore! They are much more of a distraction than smoking ever was, and so are the damn cell phones!

I don't have kids at home anymore, and I don't ever smoke in my car when a non-smoker is present. But I sure have ridden in a car with my DIL when she kept fumbling with stuff on the floor that the kids dropped, or constantly repremanding them for fighting and yammering.

Even when I tried to help, and said, "I'll get it", the kids said "NO, MOMMY, I want YOU to get it!"

I dont't live in NJ, thank God, and I hope the people there see this BS for what it si!

9. I think in NJ they don't want people tossing their butts out the window
I have a friend from NJ and she told me the cops would pull me over if I toss stuff like gum or cigerette butts out the window.

I don't think they should be allowed to ban smoking in cars (it's personal property) but I do think people should be fined/ticketed for tossing their ciggie butts out the window. Especially when it's dry out, those butts can cause quite a mess. I've seen small roadside fires start from butts not completely estiguished. What's funny is people toss their ciggie butts out the window because they don't want to stink up their car :eyes:

14. For some people because it's so small they don't consider it that
But I once passed by a nasty blazed caused by a tossed out cigerette butt. Burnt down most of the guys front lawn along the road.

I once knew a guy that said that since the butt was basically tobacco and paper it was biodegradible and isn't considered litter

13. That is just ridiculous. Bump up the fine for
littering if that is the problem, but I think you should be able to smoke in or on your property PERIOD. Don't we live in America? Land of the Free home of the Brave?

18. I may be biased since I am a smoker. But I don't
mind banning it inside public places. I would rather not, but I have to think about the others that don't want to smoke with me. But in MY car or MY house, I should be able to smoke my legalized cigarettes.

19. There are a number of reasons why banning smoking in cars
is good: Littering is one. The more important one, IMHO, is that a lot of people who smoke in cars have small children who are captive to the second-hand smoke. AND this smoke is a Class A carcinogen, people. Small children should not be exposed to this stuff. They need to be protected.

Just my take on it.

22. But what about those who have no children?
Parents shouldn't smoke around children regardless. It is a bad example, plus the second-hand smoke!
