Poll question: Best Movie Never to Win the Best Picture Oscar
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 05:34 PM by joeybee12
Well, Goodfellas was robbed when that Kevin Costner tripe won, but I have to go with The Mission. Ten years earlier, it would have won easily, but in 1986 Hollywood's rationale for awarding these worthless little f**kers changed.

Oh, actually I do think all these were robbed, since most of the winning pictures when these were out were garbage. A Beautiful Mind, my ass.

21. L.A.Confidential losing to Titanic.ROTK should sweep in 2004.
I can agree with Fellowship of the Ring, but with it being the first of a trilogy, with an edition coming out each year,I can see the logic of waiting until the last one to really bestow Oscars on it.Hope this is what happens.

57. I hope so, but I suspect...
...that the LotR series is by now "old news." To have a chance at winning, the last installment will have to be substantially more impressive than either of its predecessors, otherwise it will be a case of "been there, done that."

In terms of "buzz," I would argue that we're already seeing a huge amount for Mystic River, which I would guess is now the film to beat, especially since Academy voters seem to love movies directed by star actors (think Braveheart, Dances with Wolves, Ordinary People, and, yes, Unforgiven).

40. Agreed on L.A. Confidential.
Titanic? C'mon! :puke: Not sure if LOTR deserves the Oscar, though. Normally, I'd like to see Academy Awards go to smaller films that would otherwise not have a chance at a wider release. However, that being said, LOTR is such a monumental undertaking, I almost think it deserves a 'special' Oscar for Peter Jackson. Actually, I think he deserves an Oscar for direction more than the film deserves 'Best Picture.'

41. Watched Titanic again recently, and it doesn't hold up...
...the script was always lame, but without the overpowering effects being in a theater, it really was bad.

I still think Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio were the best things in that movie--they rose above such an awful script.

LA Confidential was great, but I still can't believe they gave Kim B an Oscar.

59. As a sign of how far Titanic has sunk (sorry)...
...note that IMDb voters don't even have it on their "Top 250" list anymore. And there doesn't seem to be any great demand for a "special edition" DVD release, either.

...Ginger Rogers won for Kitty Foyle over her.

She really made a comeback with The Philly Story because she carried the whole damn movie, and that's saying something when you're playing with Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant.

Probably the best movie about Vietnam I have ever seen, starring Jane Fonda, Jon Voight, and Bruce Dern in excellent all round performances. It lost the Oscar to the idiotic "The Deer Hunter"!

Honorary mention goes to Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" and "Dr. Strangelove."
