Going long distance on Amtrak... what do their bedrooms
look like? and the food?

I'm traveling from Newark, NJ, to Chicago, IL, going through Washington. I booked a bedroom with its own toilet/shower. Meals are included.

Any ideas on what the bedroom looks like? and the cuisine?

2. Bedrooms are small and cozy, with a tiny tv.
You must have got one of the big rooms, because the one I went across the country on had just a toilet, no shower. It's hard to get used to relaxing and eating in the same room as a toilet. But it's great to sit in your little private room with a big window, watching the country roll past. (Sure as heck beats sitting in coach, with all the screaming kids and snoring people!) ANd sleeping on a train is wonderful -- it rocks you like a baby.

The food is fine, I think. Going to the dining car is incredibly fun, and I never really noticed the quality of the food.

3. Which Train - Cardinal?
I have been in the single level sleeper rooms (Cardinal, Three Rivers, Lake Shore Limited) and it was good - own toilet, entertainment system, pretty comfy bed.

Cant speak to the bi-level cars (Capitol Ltd)

Which are you on?

I do Newark-D.C. in a business seat and then D.C.-Chicago on the Capitol Ltd.

7. I've done that route in a 2 person room
Bunk beds, no toilet, small room. It was fun. However, if you are a light sleeper, you won't get much sleep. The train rocks a lot.

6. i do amtrack to take cars to fla each year..rooms are small..
one chair and couch turns into bed..but comfortable..and better than driving!!
there are different size rooms..the deluxe is still small but it is cozy ..and they run a movie each night..usually a good up to date movie..

take a pillow and blanket...their pillows are not the best..and may i suggest wearing sweats..its more comfortable that way..first time i dressed up a bit..a waste of time!!take some snacks and a good book and magazines...and if you have one of those little tv things ( cd player with movies..it makes the time go fast!
i always get cold so i like to havce my own blanket to take a nap before dinner and dont have to unmake the couch to get a blanket out..don't take too much with you as the rooms are small and you will feel crowded...good music with you is also good if you have ipod!

i like to take a nap when i get on train..makes the time go fast till dinner..watch the movie , have a drink..then i walk around a bit before retiring..for some reason with the motion..i sleep like a baby!!
enjoy your trip!

9. I can't wait...
going to see my parents who live in Illinois and I wanted to take a train (it's a nice break from flying). I got a good deal. I'm going on my own, taking my laptop (with DVDs and recorded TV shows on it) and iPod with me and another small gym bag with clothing.

As I'm from Europe, I am used to traveling by trains, although this would be the farthest I have gone. I am saddened that Amtrak does not get respect anymore. I am excited about the food and just relaxing while watching the country roll away.

11. ohhhh the shower is
in with the toilet..its a all in one!!..i never feel comfortable showering on it..just doesnt feel right to sit on toilet and shower!!
but i take those dove or those kind of face washing packets to feel clean when i get in..they do have washcloths and soap..but the toilet shower thing..ick...not for me..
but with the sink in the room there is plenty of room to refresh oneself...take those dove or any of those face cloths pre packaged..i find those are worth every penny!

18. As small as possible.
My wife and I tried Amtrak for the first time a couple of years ago. In traveling out of Atlanta to get to the Virginia coast, we had to spend about sixteen hours in transit, on a path more or less direct to DC, then south through Richmond to Petersburg, where we had to go by car to get to Norfolk.

It was by way of an experiment, and it's one we don't plan to repeat. On the way home, we were going to have to spend nearly twenty-four hours without a cabin. After the trip up, in a cramped compartment that tossed us about and prevented real sleep, we threw in the towel and bought airline tickets.
