Franklin Lakes, NJ area - how is it?
I was contacted recently by a company in Franklin Lakes, NJ... just wondering what sort of area it is - is it a good family area with good public schools? How far is it to NYC? Is there a train or similar available to get into the city? (just thinking of a job for my wife, too, in regards to NYC)

I'm in the Hartford, CT area now and a quick check of homefair.com indicates that it is a little more expensive, but not significantly so...

2. plenty of bucks how?
I know homefair.com is not 100% accurate, but I think it indicated that it was 10% higher than where I lived in the Hartford, CT area.

Maybe I'm way off base, however?

5. It is very affluent and very expensive
My uncle lives there. Many very large homes. I would be surprised if there are many homes there under 1 million dollars. I don't know much about the school system.

Quiet country living is the hallmark of this lovely and affluent community. Forbes ranked Franklin Lakes #101 on it's "Most Expensive Zips Codes 2005." Franklin Lakes median housing price in 2004 was $889,740. Most of its one-acre building lots are substantially wooded, and many are situated on or near the shores of the 21 magnificent lakes that grace its countryside.

The housing is mostly upscale and luxurious, suitable for the most demanding buyers. There is also a semi-private golf and country club, two exceptionally beautiful private communities which offer club plan memberships, and the incomparable Audubon Wildlife Center. Neighborhood stores plus two local shopping centers provide quick and easy shopping opportunities.

Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 05:59 PM by NewJeffCT
I guess the 30-35% raise isn't going to be enough unless my wife gets similar.

Thanks for all the info.

I know Ridgewood is supposed to be very expensive.

12. thanks, I think it's a bit out of our price range...
I'm trying to figure out how homefair.com came up with an 8% difference between my town in the Hartford area & Franklin Lakes when our 1 year old 2,500 sq foot colonial with a 1000 sq foot walk-out basement on 1.5 acres would get maybe $400,000 and I can't even find anything close to that in FL, Oakland or Wyckoff for under $750,000 on realtor.com... (that would be our top limit if my wife found a job with a raise similar to what mine would be)

8. There are towns nearby
that are more affordable to live in. The schools there are very good. Not far from NYC at all, a pretty easy commute whether by car or public transportation.

In another post you mention Fairfield County CT, Bergen County NJ is very similar.

9. I know many people who live there, and I am very familiar with the area.
Going back a few years, though.

There are a *lot* of Republicans. This may have changed in the past five years or so....

As to the cost of living. Houses are very expensive. You can try to look at communities near Franklin Lakes, like Oakland (right next door), Wyckoff (next door on the other side, but more expensive than Oakland, if I recall correctly)...Mahwah...

Bergen County is one of the most expensive counties in New Jersey--if possible, and you don't mind too much of a ride, look just over the border in NY state (Suffern, um...Airmont...over there) or in Passaic County, NJ (Wanaque, Pompton Lakes which is right next to Oakland)...

Being smack dab in suburbia, FL is great for families (uh, LOL, rich soccer mom families) and schools in Franklin Lakes are excellent. They don't have their own high school--half the kids go to Indian Hills (where all of Oakland goes) and half go to Ramapo (where all of Wyckoff goes). Lots of trains....I think you're looking at....about 45 minutes into Manhattan if I remember correctly?

10. trains is for my wife
The company I'd be looking at is actually located in Franklin Lakes... I'm just thinking that if my wife had to find a job, NYC is probably pretty easy for her to find one.
