Little Steven's Underground Garage
Little Steven's Underground Garage

Week after week, this is the best show on the radio. I'm listening to it now, on Annapolis's WRNR. Getting that station is a touch-and-go situation from northern Virginia.

Little Steven plays a lot of garage bands from the sixties and some newer stuff too. Whatever he's playing, you're not likely to hear it elsewhere. Tonight's guest is Iggy Pop. His cover of "Louie, Louie" is off the scale. Even better, a few minutes earlier, Little Steven played Arthur Lee's "7 And 7 Is," one of my favorite songs from the sixties.

7 And 7 Is lyrics:

>>
When I was a boy I thought about the times I'd be a man.
I'd sit inside a bottle and pretend that I was in a can.
In my lonely room I'd sit my mind in an ice cream cone.
You can throw me if you wanna 'cause I'm a bone and I go

Oop-ip-ip oop-ip-ip, yeah!

If I don't start cryin' it's because that I have got no eyes.
My father's in the fireplace and my dog lies hypnotized.
Through a crack of light I was unable to find my way.
Trapped inside a night but I'm a day and I go

Oop-ip-ip oop-ip-ip, yeah!
<<

I should be taping this. Hmmm. The problem is that WRNR could fade out without warning. Hmmm.

"Trapped inside a night but I'm a day." It seems right for the times.

Wonderful.

1. It's an awesome radio show.
He's a great guy who supports a lot of current underground bands while giving the older garage bands their due too.

2. I ought to drop him a line
to let him know how much I appreciate his show.

One of my favorite albums is "Nuggets," which I have on the Sire re-release. Little Steven dips into that sort of stuff from time to time.
