What do you call these two groups?
I just got back from the mountains. While there it occured to me that there are two groups of people who come to the wilderness.

There are those that leave the city for the healing effects of quiet and solitude.

And there's another group that brings the city, all its noise and hubbub. with them to the wilderness.

I do not understand this last group. I will not try to understand this group. I hope they shoot themselves with their hunting rifles, I hope they drive off a cliff with their dirtbikes. I hope they talk so loud at all hours that their tongues fall off.

There, I feel better.

1. I think you're onto something here...
The folks who come for the nature as an escape are the true nature lovers, the tree-huggers if you will. For them, it's all about nature.

The other group is there because they want to be, of course...I'm not sure what to call them. But their purpose is not to be there for the nature; it's all about THEM! Weird, huh?

2. Wishing death on people for having fun, that's nice.
What a beautiful thought.

3. No, you left out a group
There are those of us who live in rural places who travel to other wilderness areas because we want to see more aspects of what we love.

But I agree with you about the second group. I cannot understand anyone who goes to a beautiful, peaceful area, looks around, says "this is nice" and then dumps all their garbage on the ground. :grr:

4. Funny. I worked for a hiking club at the base of Mt. Washington
My job was to drive the shuttle around and drop off hikers at various trails AND work at the information desk.

Some of the people who showed up to "take a walk up the mountain" were dangerous to themselves and to anyone forced to go rescue them because they didn't know that not bringing warm clothing could cause DEATH.

Sometimes we had to get mean and tell people "No, you cannot go up the trail today. You have sneakers on. You need to stay here."

The worst ones were the people who forced their dogs on a hike. Poor little dogs tore the pads of their paws scrambling over huge bolders and rescue croos had to hike up and carry them down. Those were the majority of rescues all summer.

I have lists of horror stories from people falling on their faces and smashing their teeth out to getting hypothermic and confused, thereby traveling up the mountain instead of down during a storm and dying.
