Avast or AVG?
I have been using AVG but recently learned of Avast.
What are the differences and which one should I be using?

Thanks

1. I use Avast...
Haven't ever used AVG, so I can't give you an opinion about that one...but I love Avast! It finds them all, scans quickly, and doesn't use up all your computers resources. Plus, it's free! I suggest you try Avast for a while and see what you think. If you don't like it, uninstall and try AVG.

I'll keep AVG in mind as well.

2. AVG was recommended to me by the IT guy at work
I've been using it for several months now and haven't had any problems (the free download). I don't know anything about Avast.

3. I've used them both. They both work,
but Avast has a smoother setup and
user interface. AVG has a few rough edges
that can put off some non-tech users.

4. How about resource usage?
Which one is more "invisible"; while running in the background?

5. No objective data, but...
Avast packs a few more bells and whistles.
I hardly notice either of them otherwise
even running on old 400 MHz Celeron boxes.

6. i recently had a problem that i could only account for AVG
computer started losing ability to read floppy, cd drives. All drives were working fine, just could not read them (please insert disk message would come up with disks inserted) . I tried shutting off everything running in taskmanager, but one, maybe 2 AVG resources would NOT shut off. I finally uninstalled the program, and that fixed the problem. All in all, it took about a week to find the fix, with advice coming from several folks here and in the comp user support forum, etc.

I had AVG installed for about 6 months before the problem started, and would continue using it IF i could install and run it and shut it completely off when i wanted. Just the fact that i couldn't shut it off due to preset prefs was reason to get rid of it.

ymmv.
will check out avast.
