Poll question: Best punk rock band of all-time!
Edited on Tue Nov-04-03 02:18 AM by Cascadian
Okay DU Punks or ex-punks. Now's your chance to vote for your favorite punk rock band of all time. I just picked some random well-known band names and of course you can choose your own by selecting "Other" and elaborate what band.

9. I voted "other"
Very tempted to vote for the Ramones, but then I started thinking, well, who is or isn't a punk band is really open to interpretation. And that got me thinking farther back... and then I thought of the MC5. They are THE proto-punk band. The original 45 version of Borderline is one of the high water marks that "rock" (whatever that is) has ever accomplished. So I voted for them.

24. Correct, Nirvana definetly not punk.
And I thought they were the most untalented of the Seattle groups in the nineties. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees. I think they all rock, but Nirvana, just can't get into them. And can't understand why Kurt Cobain gets so much attention.

Nirvana IS punk. It's not just about sound, it's about attitude, too, and they had BOTH. It doesn't get much more punk than their first album. Sure, it's not "roots" punk but what a redheaded step child they were.

29. They're post-punk, not original punk
The first wave of punk was in the '70s and came out of NY, Boston and other US cities initially and then the UK. Nirvana-though I loved them, came along in the late '80s. Their music is derived from the original punk of the '70s.

then all the '80s LA bands on this list have to go away, too. They were the first resurgence, after all, and not a part of either the NYC or Brit beginnings.

I don't care if you came out of the England, New York, LA, or effing Boise. Punk is punk. I even think Nirvana's early recordings were punk.
I just don't think Nirvana was good enough to garner all the attention they get.

18. OK, I voted Sex Pistols, with some caveats:
1. I agree that MC5 and The Stooges (along with The Velvet Underground)definitely set the stage for punk in the late 60's/early 70's

2. I also agree that The Ramones set the stage for the Sex Pistols in 1975/1976

3. I voted for the Sex Pistols because it is almost unanimously agreed that the Sex Pistols did what no other band had done before: turn the music industry on its head, dictate their own terms, and show that you didn't really need to know how to play instruments well to be in a band.

4. Added to the list:

Naked Raygun
Dead Boys
New York Dolls
Angry Samoans
Mission of Burma
Television/The Heartbreakers/Voidoids (Richard Hell)
Dead Kennedys
Cro-Mags
Husker Du
Misfits

20. Black F'ng Flag and no other answer will be accepted.....
Other bands got the style and fashion, some had the sound. But Flag took the sound, amped it up tenfold, ignored every single bit of the fashion, and single handedly created an underground touring network throughout every single previously forgotten nook and cranny of this country. They are the model for all that is truly punk rock.

And yes, I would agree that they devolved into an utter mess musically and personally towards the end of their career but that only adds to their genius IMHO.

Surely do remember the Meat Puppets. Right up there at the top of best bands I ever saw. Plus they never sold out. Even after their big record deal, they were still charging $5 at the door to see them play.

butthole surfers, minutemen & the meat puppets, now that's certainly a triumvirate of weirdness.... that southwester desert sound.
add in the Flaming Lips (particularly late 80's version) and things will explode

44. NoMeansNo
while not punk in the basic 3 chord sense their attitude is true punk through and through. And they still kick ass even though they're in their 50's.

MC5 would be a good pick, and Sham69 deserves some votes too.

No real bad picks anywhere in this thread though. It's all good!

45. Holy shit, great choice....
NoMeansNo's "Wrong..." truly one of the greatest albums of all time.

"I got tired of waiting because I discovered there's only a very very fine line between biding one's time....and wasting one's time. You know what I mean?"

John Wright: fucking king-hell amazing bassist. And he plays with a pick!

47. Both Wright brothers are incredible
Listening to John play that bass boggles my mind every time without fail. The bassline through "Big Dick" is as swinging as it gets,so to speak :)

Wrong is considered by almost everyone as their best, though Dance of the Headless Bourgeosie comes close for me.

Punk or not, they're my favorite all-time band period. They provide everything I listen to music for.Music wise and lyric wise they are stunning.

46. Sex Pistols
No contest! Four great singles, one great album, break up and the useless one dies. Punk, or what?

49. I can't believe I was the first to vote for the Circle Jerks..
Although it was a tough call against Black Flag...But the Circle Jerks were my first...

I can still listen to their Group Sex album everyday...I don't, but I could..

69. Ramones...but I'm feelin' a little guilty
'cause they're really a pop-surfer band, not punks. But damn...weren't they fun?!

For in-your-face politics, I'd have to vote the Clash.

When they kick at your front door...how you gonna come?
With your hands on your head...or the trigger of your gun?

72. Hey I voted for the Ramones
but it never counted my vote????? I clicked the vote by it once and it did nothing, so I clicked again and I got a message saying I already voted, but it never counted my vote....! WTF.

OK

Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, I still listen to on a daily basis...

Stiff Little Fingers, Minutemen, Supersuckers, Black Flag (without Rollins, well ok some of the rollins era was ok...), Circle Jerks, Oi Polloi, AOF, Naked Raygun, Bad Brains,

and I will have to plug my buddies bands...

No Empathy, Traitors, Misfits, Teen Idols, NOFX...

RIP Joe Strummer
