I was at the great Winnipeg Folk Festival, and though I've been going to it for most of the last twenty years, I've never heard so many Americans sounding sheepish about being Americans. From Camper Van Beethoven to The Handsome Family, all these poor folks would preface their sets with apologies for the evil empire from which they came.

Obviously this was unnescessary - anyone with half a brain knows the difference between the hideous bush regime and leftie musicians who happen to be from America. Just another sign o' the times, I guess. I felt bad for them. They sure played some good music, though.

During Reagan my husband and I often were confronted with angry comments when we traveled outside the country, especially in the Grenadines just months before we bombed Grenada.

It is very sad to be that ashamed and to have to justify yourself to others by telling them that you did not vote for your current administration.
