What does your favorite coffee cup look like? And why is it your favorite
:donut:

Mine have varied over the years.

The FBI CUP: First, it was an FBI cup. We never did get a chance to do the D.C. tour of the FBI building years ago, because they closed the tours early the day we were there, but they were nice enough to let us in the souvenir shop. (It was at least six years pre 9/11) I liked the cup because I almost worked for the department when I was in my late twenties, but I didn't continue with the interview process because I decided I wanted to start a family and was too old to give that kind of career the full attention it deserved. So the cup represented the road not taken until, poetically one day, hubby accidentally broke the cup when he opened the dish washer. He said it just fell out on its own. uh-huh.

The Jekyll and Hyde Cup: Then it was the Jekyll and Hyde souvenir cup. It was a remarkably enjoyable play and the concept of people having two sides to them is an observation that I was exploring at the time. Finally came up with a term to describe my observation, "Machiavelli Christians." Once I resolved the cognitive dissonance, I lost interest in the cup.

The National Archives Cup: I just got this one on my last family trip to D.C. I'm just damn proud that our country is established on some strong worded documents. It does sadden me, however, that those words are fading on the original documents, but maybe that's poetically appropriate given how the Right feel they can interpret the words in ways that weaken their meaning.

So, what's yours? :donut:

1. Mines from London
It has pictures of St. Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben and horse-drawn carriages. It was a gift from my daughters visit there last summer.

Prior to this one my favorite was one she made for me at the mall with her photo on it when she was 8 years old. Being 10 years old now and starting to show some signs of age I decided to retire that cup and save it to show her children some day.

7. Mine is a heavy old-style restaurant ware mug.
It is Sterling Vitrified China, with a backstamp that identifies it as made between 1939 and 1941.

I have had this mug since I was in college, in the sixties. It inspired me to become a collector of old restaurant ware mugs. I only use this one regularly, though. A cup of coffee is just not the same unless drunk from this mug.

Last time I visited them, I pulled them out of the cabinets to throw them away and my sister almost had a heart-attack. She said most of them belonged to her husband and were old cups used by his father or other relative. They actually use them cracked!

Don't think it has ruined anything.

The cup is very cool, kinda like a real thermos.
Very good insulation.

Picked up a spare at Winn-Dixie the other day, on sale for $3.99.
I highly recommend them.

I like it because it's old restaurant ware from HLC, the Homer Laughlin China Company of Newell, WV (makers of Fiestaware). If you're ever out to Newell, I urge you to take the tour.

Its color, its fundamental frustum, and its smallness please me. Coffee looks and tastes better in it than in other cups.

The other is a super-heavy, diner-style mug, weighs about 1/2 a pound, with Green Mountain Coffee on it :)

I got it way at the beginning of the Harry Potter thing.
I don't think they make 'em any more.
I have two. They just feel great in my hand, nice handle, good size.
I only make one cup of coffee every morning -- using a one cup gold filter over the cup. Works fine, exactly enough, no old coffee in a pot all day.

Mmmm.... mmmmm.... good. OH, and I use half/half -- my only vice.

46. I love those books. They are pure escape. I usually read them again...
...every summer. Makes me think I'm on a beach with nothing but time on my hands. Takes me back to my youth. In a new way -- since they aren't books I read as a child. I guess that sounds weird, but to a person who loves books... it's just moi.

I'd recommend them. No heavy lessons, no weirdness...just fun.

32. USS Kitty Hawk mug.
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 09:40 AM by Mayberry Machiavelli

It has this logo on it, it's a larger than normal mug. Bought it from the ship store during a brief deployment.
Just a source of memories from a happier, younger time. I'm drinking from it right now.

Followed by:

-Cambridge University mug with the logos of all the various colleges of Cambridge on it. Dad got for me during a visit there. Just very cool looking and classy.

-"Lieutenant" mug that is Navy blue (almost black) and has the gold LT stripes on top (same reasoning as above). Happy times when I was a LT.

-"Nuromax" mug, a Burroughs-Wellcome pharmaceutical rep freebie pimping a drug that I think pretty much no one uses any more. It's just cool because it has a logo of a human torso with a beating heart within it. I think one of the selling points of the drug was that it was supposed to have minimal effects on the cardiovascular system. I just think the logo looks cool. (on edit--Of course, the coffe that I drink out of it has SIGNIFICANT effects on my cardiovascular system!)

36. A collection of four Long John Silver's "tankards"
I got them in 1985. They are white porcelain with four different Normal Rockwell illustrations on them and the rims are trimmed in 24-carat gold. They're called the "Seafarers Collection". While I like the illustrations and all, the real reason they are my favorite is that coffee always tastes best when drunk from them and I don't know why. I probably shouldn't even be using them cuz some of the gold gets into my system at every draught.
However, I can't stand to drink green tea in them. For that beverage, my favorite is a handmade, iridescent glazed mug with the bas relief of a tree on the front. I got that at the Folk Arts Center in Ashville, NC, sometime in the '80s. Green tea always tastes best in that, again, for some unknown reason.

But now that you mention it, it is possible she is starting to take after me in her old age, and it may have been a sublimnal brag about getting a nice piece of the Emerald Isle. (Of all the places to be stuck overseas after a terrorist attack, that's one I would pick.)

49. Mine is from Disney World...
It is a little larger than the "standard" coffee cup. It is a dark pink on the inside and has Walk Disney World written in a white script near the top of the inside. The outside has scenes from all 4 parks as well as all the famous and not so famous characters from various films. It is semi 3-dimensional in that the monorail and other items are sculpted out from the actual cup a little bit.

My other favorite is actually several---they are hand thrown pottery mugs that we buy every year at the local Renn Faire.

69. I wonder why do people think that cowboys are right-wing?
I imagine it has to do with property right. So a skiing cowboy must have managed to get off the range and opened up his horizons.

65. Keeneland Jumbo Mug

Why? Because it reminds me of being in Keeneland - one of the prettiest places in North America.

Lovely in the Fall or the Spring:

66. Our Noah's Bagels Travel Mug....
My wife and I refer to it as "The Holy Grail." We both want it in the morning to take to work.

70. NARAL - Freedom of Choice
My mom got it at a pro-choice rally. When she passed away it was one of the few things of hers that I kept.

72. My favorite shows my true Geek-ness: My Babylon 5 Mug

(Not a photo of my actual mug, but my mug is identical.)

I received it as a give 10 years ago from another fan. I'd copied an episode she missed onto a tape (Probably violating copyrights all over the place) and she sent me this mug as a completely unsolicited "thank you".

It's big, holds a lot of liquid, but I've never microwaved it: the logo and the station look like they're made of a metallic paint.

75. I have a beef with Babylon 5
I had this adorable video of my daughter at her Christmas recital when she was 2 years old. She was so sharp! And then hubby grabbed the video without checking its contents and taped a Babylon 5 episode over it. Didn't speak to him for weeks and I stopped watching the show thereafter.

76. Well, that's totally understandable...Babylon 5 is so important. (kidding)
Just kidding. While I'm a big fan of Babylon 5: it's just a TV show. I'm sorry to hear about the fate of your daughter's Christmas recital recording. Please don't think less of me because I'm a fan of the show.

78. Don't be silly. I loved that show up to that point.
But a mother has to have her priorities.

73. One from where I work
Of course I can't actually disclose where I work, and I'm not actually in the building portrayed, and I don't exactly work for the people in the building protrayed and I can't post a picture of the cup and if I did I'd have to turn the picture so it wasn't recognizeable, so just imagine a picture of a plain white coffee cup and you'd be pretty close.

77. A Duck
The Long Island Duck to be exact. Just moved here and found in Flanders, LI a giant duck-shaped store that used to be a duck farm (until they all died from the toxic stuff on LI). Anyway, you can get all sorts of cool ducky products there. B-)

Because it was free with my last donation and it's the only one I have right now!
