Reason #758 to hate my husband
I've been glued to BBC most of the day. He was watching some of it with me, and made this remark. "What? Is this supposed to be their 9/11? There aren't that many people dead."

I called his mom this morning as soon as I heard, because she generally doesn't have the TV on. She said that she was watching the local CBS affiliate, but that they were showing regular programming and had not cut in. I told her that Tony Blair had returned to London from G8. Her response? "Maybe that summit is why this happened."

1. Wow! How sensitive they are!
Must be tough to deal with that all of the time.

3. Yeah, it's great
My mother in law is a raging repug, but I expected her to show some interest. Her husband called her as soon as he heard it on the radio (he's at work), but didn't feel the need to find out more info.

My husband generally chooses to be blissfully ignorant, but in the rare instance that we converse, I usually attempt to educate him.

After refusing to indict or press charges. Not much gray area on this one...

19. I don't lose it often
Mainly because I don't do it well. If I lose it, I may end up in a psych facility.

As long as you can avoid a) going to Huntsville, or b) reams of bullsh*t paperwork.

8. Well, we don't know the full death toll yet, really
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 02:20 PM by LisaM
and of course the number of people horribly injured is much higher (after the WTC attacks, there were not a lot of people who were merely injured - most were either okay, or were killed.) But since our population is roughly six times that of the UK, tell him to just multiply everything by six - so 40 people dead (if that's correct) would be the equivalent of 240 killed here, and 700 wounded (if that's correct) would be the equivalent of 4200 wounded here.

On edit: do any of these people ever use transit systems? You can't measure the result of the fear and trauma something like this imposes. I am beginning to fear that our leadership doesn't care about transit riders.

12. I think that's misleading
comparing country to country. A better figure would be city to city, New York and London are roughly the same size, aren't they?

16. Well, even if you don't compare it that way
It's insensitive to say that this isn't a traumatic event for people in London, just because it's smaller than what happened here in the states.

I certainly did not mean to imply that. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when special branch gets their paws on the homicidal maniacs who did this.

21. Well not everyone in the US was killed in NYC
but I think that 37 people blown up is a huge number anyway. I just meant, if someone doesn't see it as a tragedy because of mere numbers, find a way to try to drive the impact home.
