Spy in the sky comes to your computer
From Chris Ayres in Los Angeles
NOSEY neighbours will soon be able to spy on the Joneses using satellite images beamed from space, thanks to a free service offered by Google, the internet search engine.
Using technology that was once available only to government intelligence agencies, Google will allow web users to view 3D images of buildings and terrain and combine them with traditional online mapping and directory searches.
Unfortunately for budding James Bonds, the service offers 3D cityscapes only of big US cities, not of metropolitan areas within hostile countries such as North Korea. Users will be able to see 3D images of mountains, valleys and canyons around the globe, however.
The service, called Google Earth, will also introduce motorists to a new convenience: 3D video playback of driving directions. The playback will include local listings, such as restaurants and petrol stations, highlighted on the 3D map.
