Ikea! Ikea Ikea Ikea!
There's a new Ikea store in Atlanta. It opened yesterday. Everyone in the entire metro area has officially lost their freaking minds, especially the idiot that camped out from 6/22 until yesterday just so he could be the first through the door.

2. They make good bookshelves
other than that, what's there to rave about?

Funny, we've had Ikea in the area for years but I got most of my furniture from native Georgia and North Carolina factories. I consider Ikea just small scale stuff and I'm big people.

Woodbridge, VA has had a giant Ikea since the big mall opened. The new one is so ridiculously large people have been lost for days in there.

3. The AJC had a map & instructions for shopping there.
I'm not quite brave enough to trek over there. It supposed to take hours to shop and follow the "path" throught he store and all of the restaurants, displaya reas, play areas and restroom breaks to the warehouse and finally to one's vehicle. It looks like a lot of work!

7. Hi CottonBear!
Will and I just moved house (we're still living in Smyrna) and the LAST thing we need is another box to unpack. But I suppose sooner rather than later we're going to take the grand tour, if only because all our friends are doing it. When we go, I'll report back.

11. Hi Modem Butterfly! How are the new digs?
Hello to Will too! :hi: I hope that your summer is going well. It is hot and humid here in Athens! I'm looking forward to some quality pool time this weekend!

We'll look forward the Ikea report. It sounds like a real cultural experience! Our little house is full of antique furniture. We need to purge ourselves of belongings not add any so NO trip to Ikea for me anytime soon!

Have a great 4th of July holiday! :patriot:

6. I love Ikea
I would be willing to lose myself in their stores...

All my furniture is Ikea.... that chair with the bent wood (I don't remember the name of it) that someone posted as a picture is the most comfortable thing ever!

8. Same thing happened here, too when IKEA opened last year
IKEA opened a store in the Twin Cities last August. Krikey, you couldn't get near the place for weeks. All of the local Scandinavians (and there are lots of them) were verklempt with joy and mobbed the place.

I like the look of a lot of their stuff and have found it is pretty hard to shop there without spending lots of $$! They just suck you in.

9. IKEA is pretty good
Good stuff, low price. When I grow up I want to live in one of their stores. And they were the first to put a gay male couple in their TV ads.

Khash.

10. The best IKEA ad...
had a couple with their teenage daughter in a living room yelling at each other because the daughter is pregnant. I can't remember all the dialogue but it ended something like this:

mother: "...oh, so now this is all my fault!?!?!?"
father: "well you're the one who smoked pot in college!!!!"

Then the camera zooms out and it turns out they're in an IKEA showroom. A clerk approaches them and asks them what they think and they calmly respond that the living room is great.

;)

I always hoped that their work practices were as cool as the Euro-style environment at first seemed. I don't know anyone who works there, though. I love the cafeteria... very kid friendly.

20. Me and Mrs. RKZ bought some furniture from there....
and returned it the next day, for it had zero structural integrity. I mean, you buy a set of shelves, you'd think it'd be strong enough to hold a goddamned stereo and some CDs!

Plus, there's all those goofy names. "Sluffo, Gritaasd, Spliink," etc.

21. see I love the names!
We have plenty of shelves from there and they have been fine. Some of their stuff is pretty flimsy. But I also have some work furniture we bought there - couches - and they held up well.

I just love that place. Can't help it.

30. "Euro-Like"
Ikea is the one store that looks *exactly* the same all over the world. I visited a CT Ikea and the only out-of-place thing I saw was a cashier wearing a Bush pin.
And well, the store was somewhat on the smallish side.

without it collapsing. And they had 3000 couches to choose from, and NOT ONE had any NASCAR iconography on it.

PAH!

I went to my high school reunion last year (don't ask which one...) and the wife of a classmate at our table was wearing a dress with a distinctive pattern...the Harley Davidson logo.
Gotta love small town Illinois.

31. Can't an English Lit major enjoy the occasional sojourn to
a sporting stadium and admire the protean energy of those daring young men in their jaunty NASCAR jalopies without some wag impugning his character? I mean, it's almost enough to make a fellow spit his Coors Light all over his crisp, snow white wifebeater.

15. They opened a new store here
in Bum Fuck Suburbia. Meh. I might go, but I'd have to practially drive to Oklahoma to do so, so I'm not in any big rush. And, honestly, I prefer to make my purchases IN the city, so the sales tax stays in the place where I live.

16. Look. If you live in the South
and like contemporary furniture, IKEA opening here does create some noise. I've suffered for twenty years living in a place which worships faux Williamsburg traditional...chair rails, floral chintz. It's about time we have some contemporary stores.
And nobody got killed.
Seriously. IKEA openings in Europe have resulted in deaths.
We're so civilized here.
Must be our leadership.

18. Heh.
In the AJC today, there were a few shots of the opening and a quote from one woman who was obviously very confused, talking about how disappointed she was with the quality of furniture and the fact that she would have to assemble it herself. She said that she would never come back to Ikea again.

22. Yawn - they've been here for years (first US store)
they're down the road from me, and create horrendous traffic jams.

I'm not really a fan of the furniture, but DAMN they have great accessories - rugs, posters, frames, plates, planters, lighting, etc.

29. Their kitchen equipment is the best
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 02:13 PM by Godlesscommieprevert
They make a garlic press which is the best I've ever had for some ridiculously low price. The plates, pans, glasses etc are excellent and really cheap, and the candles are the cheapest I've ever found. I love IKEA, and can't figure out why they still haven't got a store near Boston - all those students requiring cheap stuff - it's a no-brainer.
