It was interesting, but I still don't like the Deus Ex Machina ending... didn't like it in the original movie, or in the book.

TOtal fucking waste of time and celluloid, I'm sure.

Steven "I can't direct any more" Spielberg meets Tom "I still can't act to save my goddamned miserable asshole pretentious useless shitbag of a non-life" Cruise in making a movie of a near-sacred text of science fiction.

Yeah, it's gonna be good. NOT!!!!!

I hope it's everything that it should be and that I want it to be. I doubt it will, but I hope so.

And if so, I'm logical enough that I will admit it.

Though I'm sure that Dakote Fanning will be frickin' brilliant in it, and make Cruise look like even more of a piece of shit that he is. Dakota is awesome!!

Unless Spielberg manages to wring a shitty performance out of her, but I doubt that would happen. Spielberg might do trite sacchariny crap on occasion, but he still gets good performances out of people.

I might be opinioniated, but I'm neither illogical nor stupid. It's a good bet that it's gonna suck, and that I'm gonna hate it, but until I see it, I can't form an opinion. Fuckin' duh.

Though from the trailers I've seen, it LOOKS like a fucking piece of shit.

But then - it might not be!

And if it isn't an abominable and uncreative piece of shit, I'll admit it.

31. I'm generally opposed to judging a movie by its TRAILER, too!
That goes along with judging it by the non-film antics (or lack thereof) of its "stars" and "director" --

But, then, again, people like to gossip (I even do it occasionally, but not about movie stars or directors) and I guess I'm in the minority!

See you at the movies!

32. I don't give a shit about their antics
I judge them on their "art" only. I don'tcare how actors vote, or act in private life - if they're good, they're good. If they suck, they suck. Cruise just happens to be one who can't act for shit AND is an asshole.

But I would never be so ignorant as to judge a movie (or a book, or a painting, etc.) based on the private life antics of the artists involved.

The art stands on its own.

47. So making lots of money redeems him?
:wtf: Bouncy Ball had a brilliant thread about her puzzlement with this line of thinking the other night. I was happy to discover I am not alone in my absolute disgust with the material bent of this line of thought. Quantity and quality should never be confused.

If making lots of money made one's pursuits and life's purpose noble or worthwhile, then I imagine Wal-Mart is the apex of human virtue. Or the Saudi Royal Family. Now THEY are laughing all the way to the bank!

One more point: Cruise doesn't seem to be laughing himself anywhere these days. Having a mental breakdown is more like it. He is getting scarier by the day. :scared:

I have never posted a thread about him, and I hardly mentioned him at all until last night. I was more concerned about your defensiveness concerning him, since you did post a thread about how hot you think he is a few weeks ago, before his public meltdown.

I was analyzing, if anything, the very common American trait of measuring a person's accomplishments by their bank book.

Let the asshole laugh. He's earned his money, and he has it. America wants to give him more money to see him in more films. So be it. He's earned it.

I don't think he's much of an artist, but I wouldn't bar him from cashing his checks.

And as Zomby said, the amount of money someone has doesn't mean diddly shit about their moral quality, their artistic quality, nor their worth as a human being.

46. Amen brother!
I have found in my considerable experience with film that a trailer, the name of the director, and the casting are VERY GOOD INDICATORS of suckage potential. I have yet to have my suspicions and instincts proven wrong by trusting my gut on previews and synopses. Whenever I decide I will go against my gut and succumb, I prove myself right. This turkey has "Independence Day/Armageddon" style BLOCKBUSTER written all over its overblown Spielbergian face.

Movies are more often than not - especially hyped-up hit movies -FORMULA. Formula action, dialogue, special effects, and plots (as it were, if such). The same shit, recycled ad nauseum. It's a damn shame a classic H.G. Wells story, which will never be translated better than when Orson Welles did it on the radio when he caused a PANIC, has been reduced to Hollywood tripe of the most expensive and overproduced kind.

So let's hear it for trusting our judgment! :toast:

40. Blondie, this is a common trait -- "Judge not, lest ye be judged"
in a movie sense, not in the Biblical sense, of course.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to face people who just KNOW a movie would be BAD -- before they even SEE it!

Amazing.

Just part of the three-decade routine I've been through so many times before.

However, the trait has taken a quantum leap now that the Internet is here.

Potential moviegoers get to show their bias (by ass???) months and even years BEFORE a film is released.

See you at the movies!

45. I guess this is only superimposed by another scenario which I abhor:
Reviewer "A" is flown to a beautiful place like San Francisco, or Hawaii, or New York -- wined and dined and put up at a beautiful hotel, introduced to the stars and director of a movie, and then flown home.

Reviewer "A" then sees the movie at a preview.

And -- guess what -- Reviewer "A" gives the movie a BIG THUMBS UP!!!

Believe me, this happens. I don't know how those reviewers keep anything straight in their minds.

P.S. I've never had this happen to me -- too small a fish in the broadcasting sea!

Good night and good luck!

When the budget matinee charges $5.25, and the concessions are outrageously priced, I'm better off waiting for the movie to hit the premium cable channels. Most of them aren't worth it.

Overall, I'd say it was pretty good. The sound was really good. The noises the tripod things make were actually pretty scary. In terms of "alien invasion" movies, I liked Independence Day better, mostly because it had more action.

Most memorable line for me was Tim Robbin's character noting that "Occupations always fail." Granted, he was kind of out of it at the time, but I can't help but think there might be a message in there.

50. I saw this movie in 1996, actually. It was called "Independence Day"
And I do not want to see it again.

I will not, under any circumstances, see another "aliens coming to Earth and start blowing things up" movie. Including Spielberg's latest.

51. I'd trade Will Smith for Dakota Fanning any day of the week.
Seriously, there is NO comparison. WOTW is so much better.

61. I thought it looked too much like IDay too when
I saw the trailers. Seeing WOTW doesn't appeal to me at all. :)

75. No you didn't.
First of all, this movie is based on a novel by one of the most talented science fiction authors EVER. That book kicked my ass. The film came close to doing it justice, which is another amazing accomplishment for Spielberg on my short list (I'm not that big a fan of his).

Independence Day was a huge pile of crap. I'm sorry you suffered through that vacuous loathsome film, but if you want to see a smarter version with better effects, see this one.

Or stay home and rent Mars Attacks!

71. I passed on taking my son to that
thought it would be too intense. We saw the new Batman movie, instead. Different type of intense. Christian Bale was excellent as Batman.

67. I'm not planning on seeing it.
I thought I heard last night something about product placement for Tucker Carlson's show somewhere in the movie. Don't know if that's true or not, but I've got plenty of other reasons not to see it.

69. Sounds like one of those silly movies.
One with too much drama in it. Don't care much for drama once it goes so far.

78. Saw it this afternoon
Didn't like it that much. Acting was subpar, as expected, attempts at humor fell flat more often than not and as expected the visuals were fantastic. I have no interest in seeing this again but if you do have any interest in seeing it, see it on the big screen in a theater with top notch sound because those two aspects are the two lone highlights of this film.

80. Saw it last night
I liked it. Wasn't my favorite film of the year (that would be Sin City) but the effects were faithful to H.G. Wells's vivid imagery, and the adaptation of the story was excellent, although imperfect.

Tom Cruise's character was kind of an asshole, but in a way that made the film more poignant. Spielberg is a bit too sentimental for my tastes, he was in this one as well, but it worked. 3 1/3 stars.
