How many here believe there is virtue in showing a little class?
Note: Yes, I expect there to be a subject line with "...showing a little ass" to surface within twenty minutes.

I ask this because I usually find myself in the minority in asserting that:

1. If you actually fancied Reagan to be a hero and not a butcher (meaning you've drank the kool-aid), you probably should take your baseball cap off when you pass the bloody casket.

2. It's your constitutional right to talk (loudly) to your boyfriends or girlfriends about the amazing sex you had in the milieu of a *family restaurant*, but it makes a lot of patrons uncomfortable.

3. You want to wear a thong with low-riding jeans? Great. Just don't bend over and wonder why everyone thinks you're a slob.

1. I think that it depends upon
how an individual was raised and what that person values. Personally, I feel it is important to dress appropriately when in public and not to draw attention to oneself via loud talk, etc.

3. Yeah, I don't really understand why some people think
having good manners is somehow bad. The whole idea behind manners is to make the world a more pleasant place for everyone. Just because something is not against the law doesn't mean you should do it. I don't know - I was taught as a kid to respect other people and that meant refraining from behavior that would be annoying to the majority of those around me - loud cursing in public places, inappropriate attire, rudeness.

The idea of community is, to me, an idea of compromise. Individualism is good, of course, but to simply bull through life with the idea that what you want is the only important thing is selfish and wrong. We all have to share the world and showing respect and concern for our fellow man is just good sense, to me.

5. I'm in the same minority, DerekG.

I find it extremely annoying to dress up for dinner at a nice restaurant and see men wearing ball caps inside the restaurant.

Incredibly, male students used to wear ball caps during chapel services at a local Southern Baptist college. They probably still do but I'm no longer on the faculty so I no longer have to see them, thank God!

And don't even get me started about inappropriate topics at inappropriate volume levels in public spaces!

6. Your first qualm recalls an episode of The Sopranos
Tony stares down a young man in an Italian eatery until the latter removes the cap; I'll never forget the subdued fury in Gandolfini's eyes.

7. I have seen Italian men shame a drunk into leaving a

nice trattoria in Florence. Drunkenness is not considered cool in Italy, and it was New Year's Eve so everyone wanted an especially nice evening. We became aware of this man at a nearby table and gradually watched the drama unfold. The owner tried to tactfully deal with the man since the guy's friend had been unable to convince him it was time to go home. After the owner walked away from their table, the drunk yelled an insult at him. At which point, Italian men from a number of tables stood up and surrounded the man's table. I think only one or two said anything to him but it was beautiful. There was no threat of violence, just a community statement that it was time for him to go. The drunk quickly left, leaning on his friend, everyone sat back down and continued enjoying their evening. Americans would probably have pretended not to notice the drunk and avoided getting involved, forcing the owner to call police, perhaps.

A man who forgets to remove his hat when looking at art in an Italian church will be quickly and firmly told to remove it, too. I've seen it happen.

10. when I see ballcaps I want to ask:
Are You Eight Fucking Years Old?

Of course this would be rude and may lead to fisticuffs.

BUT ARE YOU EIGHT FUCKING YEARS OLD!?

1. Hell, yes. Freaks....

2. Close the gate between your brain and your mouth from time to time.

3. Too much flesh is not always a good thing. A little left to the imagination is often a kind service to others.
