1. I love crayons!

One of the greatest thrills of my childhood was getting one of those big, 126-packs of Crayola Crayons for school. I _still_ love crayons.

2. As a kid

I would cover a red piece of paper with black crayon and then use a needle to draw on it by scraping away the wax. I liked working from dark to light.

3. That technique is called "sgraffito,"

which in Italian means "to scratch." It can be a beautiful technique. My favorite contemporary American artist, Cole Morgan, employs it often in his work:
